Actually, as I know, most ammonia exits through the gills. The +2 ions, like calcium, get out with urine though. That what I understood from some introductory texts on ichthyology....

how will you know if the fish is urinating?

freshwater fish don't drink but urinate profusely, while saltwater fish do the opposite. The exception seems to be sharks, which have flesh as salty as the water in which they live.

I saw my pike cichlid pee himself when my datnoid tried to turn him into a snack. So long as it was brought up, the fact that fish urinate in the water should be brought up more when we preach to people about the weekly waterchange. That might help drive the point home.

Why the hell would you suck on the siphon hose in the first place. just place the tube underwater let it fill tilt it up let it start to drain and put the tube back underwater or
fill the damn thing at the tap cap the outlet with your finger drop the outlet in the bucket put the tube in the tank and the siphon starts automaticly.or just use a python water change system -Anne
