So, I did my usual morning routine of watching various new YouTube videos about fish of course. When I saw this video by Skip in my recommended section:

I recommend to take a look at the video description along with watching the video before giving your opinion. I thought that this would be a nice topic to talk about here since we've had several threads that have popped up about line breeding. What is your opinion about the whole "keeping a pedigree of a fish" thing?

Great point of discussion. I find it to be a bit of a novelty to see the family tree laid out in that manner. Looked to be like 4th generation? Seems silly at that point, I see more impactful maintenence of this info for wild caught and first generations. If we're talking things like A. lyonsi, then sure... let's keep it tracked that far back. However, I feel amphilophus is a tough example to use with all the natural hybridization we've already discussed. Maybe more easily tested on things like parachromis?

Its an interesting idea for sure. Easy enough with WC fish and F1's and F2's but once you hit Tank raised it gets complicated. Especially if you've bred them with fish from an outside source. I think a pedigree makes the fish more valuable *To the right buyer* for sure. But it also just looks like potential to jack up prices based on what the seller wishes to disclose to you.

That's also why I recommend to check out the description. Seems as if he talked more about Midas and Red devils in the video and how they got crossed by many faults in the past.

Buy from a trusted source, that uses proper latin names - not common trade names such as "midas" and/or "red devil". Otherwise pedigree don't mean jack sheet, yo.

Was actually hoping you'd chip in RD. Listening to him talk about the differences between the two reminded me of the Cichlids of the Americas thread and what you posted about Labiatus/Cittrinellus individuals and how they can look different from another even if from the same lake.

TO me the pedigree he showed is more a sales gimmick, not one of the fish named on there had a catch location, as there's a chance that another 3/4 sp could be added to amphilophus there is a high chance he is just selling midevils.

Pedigrees/lineage tracking seems to me like something a lot of people in the aquarium trade/hobby would probably be interested in.

Not sure about the example he showed, but I know he said that his Trimacs originated from three separate catch locations. Forgot whether or not it was on paper or not.
