Fish with a Pedigree?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To certifiy a fish you need to be able to distinguish it from all others, which would mean a microchip, trying to chip 1 or 2 inch fry is going to be impossible.
A line breeder doing a pedigree, is only ever going to be a gimmick and even if he does do it he will have to catalogue every fish in the family tree, otherwise it's just a list of names.
If you want proof of your fish authenticity get it from a reputable seller and keep the receipt or invoice.

hmm, the whole concept definitely gets tricky when applied to fish.

I think if someone breeding at home (with fish they got from a reputable source) wants to keep track of their breeding and is thus able to provide lineage info about their fish, there's no harm in it.

Some may consider it a gimmick, but if the person is a long time trusted member of a community I don't see why it couldn't carry some weight.

Good points. Though a downside to this is the fact that fish usually have spawns upwards into the hundreds and some thousands. While dogs have significantly smaller litters, so keeping tracking of puppy's lineage is definitely easier than tracking every single fish fry in any given spawn. Thats a huge drawback when using a system not designed for fish. Applying dog terms to fish is like trying to grown an apple the same way you would a carrot.

The system is definitely not perfect for use on fish, and this is probably why it never became a thing. The dog breeds and pedigree system arose from the dog/kennel clubs of the late Victorian era, eventually becoming the huge international system that exists today. Aquarist clubs have existed for a long time but no system ever came of it, presumably due to these difficulties.

If people want to be getting super uptight about the purity of their Central American cichlids (there seems to be a pretty big split on hybrid fish - you either are ok with them, or you hate them) they may have to compromise on the perfection of the system and get something done.
