Fish with a Pedigree?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Pedigrees/lineage tracking seems to me like something a lot of people in the aquarium trade/hobby would probably be interested in.

I think a pedigree system could work if done well and properly. But then we'd need some sort of elaborate "pure species" certification system in place. At most I'd think it'd help with the breeding of endangered fish or those on the CARES list to prevent too much inbreeding. Not too sure about the line breeding part tho...

Speaking of which...Who the hell gave him certification and why is this just now a thing? Excuse my language. I'm genuinely curious.

Yes, I think the certification system is the bottleneck. Anyone can get some fish and then say they got the from somewhere else. Unless and until the seller is trusted by the buyer it's a hard sell or a novelty in my opinion.

I don't think it would make a lot of difference.
I think the trusted sellers we buy fish off with catch locations would be the only people that would see the worth in any such certificate anyway.
Most other breeder/sellers offering these certificates could make you question the authenticity of the certificate as much as the fish itself.

I still want to know where he got the certification done. I live in the same area he's in and I've never heard of a place here that certifies whether or not a fish is pure.

Same here.Ive heard a lot of talk about certification to validate a fish recently.I have never seen it in place anywhere in the UK as of yet.

What is he on about, dogs have pedigrees yet there not naturally occurring sp, what he is trying to say only a wolf could have a pedigree. Further more the bit of paper he was showing has no relevant information that someone who wants a pure amphilophus sp would need to know

I'm about to message and ask the president of the CCA (The local fish club) if they do fish pedigree certification now. Also since when has koi ever been a hybrid? I thought that they were just carp that were selectively bred for colors? That's what I learned in school.

I didn't want the thread to turn into something that's just straight bashing the guy. But somethings seem a bit weird with what he says and demonstrates...

To keep the conversation going. If there were to be some sort of pedigree qualification system in place. Let's say that your local club does in fact give out certifications for pure fish. Do you think that this would have an actual impact on the hobby? How should fish become certified?

Another question. Should it be limited towards endangered fish and CARES fish like I stated earlier? Or should any person attempting to make their own "strain" of a fish be able to acquire certification on the fish?

Who would certifiy a fishes "purity"? Can only a fish that can be traced back to wild caught be certified?
I have pure Festea that can be traced back to wild caught. Can I just have a certificate made up? I dont think so. I mean, I could but what weight would it carry? Not much im guessing.
