I agree with the convict or hrp pair. I personally think they are very underrated fish and if they weren’t so easy to breed they would be a lot more sought after. A pair would be nice in a 29 gallon and watching them raise their fry would be a nice benefit as well. Just my two cents.

Blue acaras get up to 6 inches but usually 5 inches. They have good personality I know this because I have to electric blue acaras.
A pair of any of the convict family would be ok in there. I had a pair of normal convicts in a 29 for a bit, now my son has them tank and all.
At the moment I have a pair of HRP'S, cousins of convicts, in a 55gal with lots of tankmates. I love these little guys soo colorful!

I love the goldfish suggestion. I have an oranda with loads of personality. She spits at people she doesn't like, plays with toys, likes to be touched, and throws tantrums when she isnt fed on time.
1 or 2 individuals of a smaller breed such as demekin could be comfortably housed in 29g. As with all goldfish, roll heavy on the filtration. 300gph minimum.
Maybe Amazon leaf fish or nandus nebulosus, or some puffers like pea puffers or amazon puffers.
