Fishing in Florida!!! Load heavy:)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very interesting. Don't they have to compete w/ NA bass for the same foods? Like are LMB numbers affected? I would have thought they could have done the same job and still native.

They don't eat all same foods. Peacocks won't touch Midas juvies and largemouth will. They have seemed to find somewhat of a balance.. And these fish aren't in every water system. They're in quite a bit tho.

From my experience where ever the peacocks are most plentiful the LM bass are almost non existent.. So they do compete with them.. Peacocks will readily take any fish that will fit in their mouth including any bluegill and Juvie LM bass around..

In the 80s Cichla ocell, mono, and temensis. We're released in the South, Florida canals as a sport fish and a predator for all the non natives living an thriving in the water ways. Temensis never made it through the colder months, but thee Ocell's and Mono's did. As a result they interbred and created a hybrid. And now thats what we have swimming around in South, FL.

I call them Florida hybrids

Actually it was orino not temensis that were released.. Approx. 3,000 to be exact.. Their growth rate and older breeding age were just as much a factor as the cold.. Within 5yrs of the release they couldn't find anymore in the released canals.. It in assumed there are no more. But, it's possible..
Also the fish used for the release were farm raised ocels/mono hybrids.. Approx. 20,000 were released in the initial stocking. Believe it was 1984

That is what I was thinking. I have see LMB take bullfrogs as food. They are pretty aggressive eaters but so are pbass. Also from what I understand oscars are abundant too. Combine that w/ snakeheads and other invasive predatory fish it really makes things tough for natives. But it seems sunfish are thriving at the same time.

Yes oscars are really abundant and the canals are now filled with more exotics than natives by far.. The sunfish are no where near what they were years ago. It's easier to see or catch a cichlid than sunfish.

with all these people wishing for exotics in their local waters, i hope they dont really do that =D

Where I fish had both LM and peacock. And the peacock wouldn't touch the Midas fry or growouts. Not saying it isn't possible but this is what I learned and was also confirmed by my friend who lives on the canal and fishes them every day

Yes you will have both but, the LM will not be in the numbers where pbass aren't common. Go afew miles away into the Everglades and it's a different story..LM are quite easy to catch in numbers and sizes.. Btw, I've used Midas for pbass bait and they work quite well so I know they eat them ;-)

I'm guessing that you meant to type are common, not aren't.
