  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Alright guys I have a question for the cat fishermen. What temp is a good time to start trying to get some monsters? Does time of day matter? What size hooks are you guys using?

Thanks, CJ.

Cell phone was messed up so I couldnt get these pics till now. My bro and I went fishing on the 23 we only landed 2 but I missed 2 more and he missed 1 other. I somehow forgot the scale in the truck so didnt get measurements and weight. As you can see I got mine on a spinner bait. My bro got his on a kvd crank.

I don't think you have blue cats just flatheads and channels over there. Channels bite year round and I use 4/0 hooks and cut bait. Flatheads really start biting with water temps over 60 in spring. Use live bait and match your hooks to your bait. This year I'll be using a lot of 7/0-8/0 gamakatsu big river hooks.

Thanks jworth! I think im going to get myself a nice catfish setup. So while I'm out trying to get some bass I'll put that out there and try and land a few cats. What rigs are you guys using?

abu garcia 6500c3... 'nuff said ;)

Hes got it!! If you dont want to spend a ton of money an Ugly stik catfish is good to pair it with!

Theres blues in cali, i think...

anyways i like a uglystik catfish rod 7' paired with a shakespeare arsenal reel ($35)
for channels/flatheads 6/0-7/0 Gamakatsu octopus circle hook and about a 4oz noroll sinker
live bluegills/chubs or cut pieces of either, shad isnt bad either

for blues 8/0 gamakatsu octopus circle hook with an 8oz noroll sinker
The blues round here like a big piece of shad but hit on just about anything fresh cut

Blues and channels will bite all year. Blues can be hard fiddle come juneish when the spawn is on. Summer time its best to fish at night. The fish come shallow to feed and you can beat the crowds. Flatheads dont seem to really turn it on until it gets warmer, usually when the water is 55 degrees but i usually get them around may. And catch them until about october.

Right now is the time to fish, actually year round for channels and blues, flats will be MUCH harder to catch but its possible. Any time of day you will catch them, my fav is at night.

I caught these cats within the past 2 weeks and tonight. 1 flathead and the rest channels. Almost had a huge grassy tonight but he just missed my bread
