I am catch and release 90% of the time. All fish that were kept in the pictures were collected for scientific research.

How do the gars and bowfin rate as fighters?

They both fight hard and jump a good bit. The bowfin are very good a shaking the hook. I lose more that a catch unless they are in a feeding mood. They turn on and off like no other fish I have gone after. When they are on they are easy to hook, when the are off you make hook 1 out of 4 that bite. You can catch big bowfin on light tackle if you are careful and use a strong leader, just be careful when they get close to the boat. When they see the boat they will run the other way. So far this year the biggest bowfin I have caught overall was 10.25 lbs and about 8lbs on ultralight.

gars are pretty strong, the bigger the worse. Nice red snappers, slap em on the grill.
