Yeah, i wish i had you beard ;)

and i wish i lived where you did haha, nice fish!, i'll see what i get tomorow haha

I am catch and release 90% of the time. All fish that were kept in the pictures were collected for scientific research.

Please tell me what type of scientific research you are conducting?

Why would one need to perform scientific research on a 4+ foot Gator Gar?

That fish is better off producing young than being a scientific trophy to take pictures of and brag about on a fish board.

I want to know exactly what research you are doing.

ALso, supporting the Bowfin via their Gill plates is very rough and detrimental to the fish. One should support the body section of the fish aswell to offset the load. I would suspect one who is performing "scientific" research to know this. But I guess not.

first of all garfish down here are a commercial species and are the most numerous of any large fish down here(and tasty, put that fresh on the pit  tastes like chicken) they are also considered a nucence in some cases.
there are lots of reasons to research them. like why do they gulp air? how did they out live the dinosaurs? why is their row poisonous? (enough to kill humans!)

secondly you obviously don't know a thing about choupique (the louisiana name for bowfin). that is the toughest fish on earth. they can breath air, and their skull and jaw system is like steel. you are not going to hurt it by holding it in any certain way. i won't go into choupique survival stories on here, but trust me i have caught well over 500 in my 25 years. they are tanks, you can't hurt them. so please keep your ignorant and highly offensive comments to yourself!

i didn't realize the interest people had in catching choupique. we have more than plenty down here. they like acidic water and can be found in mass quantities in any cypress/tupelo gum swamp across the south. i have never seen one less than 14'' dead or alive. it is the strangest thing. i have never even heard of anyone ever catching a little one. when i decide to fish for them on rod n reel, my favorite lure is a spinnerbait with gold blades and hot pink in the skirt. white and hot pink, chartreuse and hot pink, or all three colors. however, the best way to figure if they are in your home waters is to set trot lines or jugs baited with crawfish, chicken hearts, beef melt, or shiners in shallow areas that have a lot of trees or thick vegetation. their meat is very light and delicate which prevents it from being prepared in many different ways. the two most popular ways we do it down here is fresh on on the grill or fried paddies. for on the grill the fish must be fresh and never frozen. put the whole fillet with the scales still on it scale side down onto the grill. then pretend it is your favorite type of meat and season it as you would that. cook it until you can see the meat starting to separate from the scales. to make paddies out of them take the filleted meat and break it apart in a bowl, add onion tops, parsley, seasoning, and whatever else you like it there and mix it all together. then like you would a hamburger, take a wad of meat and make a paddy. dip the paddy in an egg wash, and then into some bread crums. now place your paddies stacked and seperated by wax paper into the freezer and let them freeze until they are fully frozen. when you are ready for your fish burgers just fry the frozen paddy in some hot grease.:woot:
