Fishkeeping hobbyist stereotypes you encounter when people learn of your hobby?

For me, when I mention the type of fish I keep...they look fairly alarmed! Considering I am a female! LOL But I was never ashamed of my hobby and proudly voiced it. When my husband first met me he told me as a kid he kept angel fish and a few other little community fish...he really wasn't to familiar with the monster fish I kept until he met them...and was hooked! :)

Good jod those are monster fish I'm so tired of people saying there Oscar's our monsters (no offense to any Oscar keepers thats JMO) I've got a alligator gar 3 aros a arapiama a red tail cat shovel nose cat clown knife in my big tank. What kind of gar do u have?

The payaras those are vampire tetras right?? U have some amazing monsters I would love to see some pics some time where r u located (what state)

I think its all relative. Oscars are small monster fish. They are a fairly large predatory fish, require special care compared to most run of the mill petstore fish, and have great personality.

A lot of people don't think a 75,90, or 125 are large tanks. But it's hard to argue that they are small. If anything those are what I'd consider the starting point for large tanks.

The truth is that a 55g is the largest tank most people ever see. Anything beyond keeping guppies in a 10g is monster for the average person. But we aren't average people lol

I just feel like every common fish keeper has a Oscar there at almost every fish store. I kept them for a good 5 years but grew to strongly dislike them they are so messy and destoryed my tank on a daily basis and ruined many heaters so I guess with that being said they are monster's ditructive ones..lol there just to common for my taste but this is just my 2 cents if u like Oscar's then more power to you I'm nobody to tell anybody what is cool and what is not, I just know what I like.

Iv got a 450g tank and its small to me when I started doing this 10 years ago I started with a 55g and that was huge to me and iv gradually worked my way up to this 450 but I really want a 1000g tank and ill have one soon anuff and after a while I'm sure that will seem small. There's just somthing about fish keeping for me I'm never satisfied.

Almost every woman I have dated has thought it was cool, like they wanted to see it cause they think aquariums are beautiful. If not then they were indifferent, "like oh cool I have a cat"
It usually comes up in conversation along the same lines as me having a dog, and nobody has ever acted negatively towards it.

I think its just an excuse to blame being turned down on something you sait... instead of the girl just not being that interested in you.
I got nervous and talked about dicks for 20 minutes on a first date and I still dated that girl for a while after, she thought it was funny.

Oh man, you tell girls on dates that you have cats? Id say that scores even higher on the weirdness scale than fishkeeping.
