Fishroom Disaster

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
George, took a look at your pics, and that is exactly what my tank crack looked like. Again, the manufacturer is the one who gave me the physics lesson. Foam wont matter, its about the stresses that natural earth movements/shakes vibrationes puts on the glass. With the weight laying on the stand the pressure to flex the glass is absorbed by the stand, and wood is flexible, not glass, so if the wood is too rigid, too many nails etc, and support beams then the glass will crack. If this makes any sence?. Anyway that is what they expalined back in 1997, and as I said, once they fixed it, it has NOT stopped holding fish to this day.

Joe, never thought the stand could be built too well or too rigid. I'll have to look into that. Maybe use a piece of foam under it just in case. Mine cracked the same way, an upside down u from one corner to the other. Take a look at the pics I posted, is that what your tank looked like?

I'm not so sure about the tank needing to flex. The extra weight on the ends of a tank can only be from the weight of the glass and I'm pretty sure the glass can withstand the extra weight. If there is no flexing from a super strong stand, there would be no shear forces on the glass and I don't think it would crack.

Glass can have built in defects from manufacture or poorly cut, perhaps that is why a new tank may crack? All of my tanks are used and sit on a variety of stands from cinder block to wood frame to 4" square steel tubing. I have foam under all of them. So far, no problems apart from a poorly made sump that cracked (no top braces).

Just my 2 cents worth.

That's a bummer :/ A tank leaking is always a great fear. Hope everything works out alright.

Sorry to hear man. Hope the tank situation gets taken care of, and the fish remain ok..

On a side note, I have heard about this foam underneath over and over again. Is it just styrofoam, and under the glass, or trim? All these replies makes me, of course, paranoid now..

I dont mean to pry, but how can the tank flex if the stand it is sitting on does not flex? If your stand moves or flexes the tank will follow those movements, and that is what we dont want right? I'm just not understanding what the manufacturer told you, and to me it just sounds like a way to get you to buy a stand from them, no offense.

Oh, and GM, best of luck to you, I always enjoyed photo's of those fish. Also, good luck carrying that monster tank up stairs, thats gonna be a bi*ch haha

George, I hope the tank manufacturer doesn't give you a hard time after all the slight hardship on the fish and the clean up.
