fix flowerhorn aggressive toward tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i would recommend getting some sort of large school fish (SDs or barbs or something) to try to spread the agro. one thing you gotta keep in mind is she feels threatened by the 2foot catfish being so close to her or her potential nest.

with it being a 265g i think you got room for like 6 SDs or even 3 or 4 barbs. what else is in the tank with the fh and pleco and catfish?

there's also 2 4" pictus catfish, kitty fish's "kids". He helps protect them from her. THat's all. I tried putting a big 11-12 inch bala in a couple months ago, but my catfish tried eating it...had it in the catfish's mouth 3 times...didn't think we'd get him to let go. So, no big silver fish. My catfish ate many fish, but mainly bottom dwellers.

I had thought also about getting a shoal of small top dweller fish...hoping the catfish won't eat them all tho. Any other ideas on type of fish I can put in for a distraction?

Ideas are great guys, btw...thanks for the help. I really don't want to get rid of her. I'm in the process now of setting up the 20g, rearranging furniture and such...as a temp home...

just brought home 3 4" tin foils. The FH is interested in them...but, so is my catfish. I just hope they survive. I did put food in the tank, but no one ate. Too distracted by the new guys I guess. Just see how this goes

We tried setting up the 20g (temp tank), but we really have no where to put it.

Get a huge armored pleco if you dont already have one. It will keep the FH occupied and the pleco can take the abuse from my experience...

welll, already have a snowking pleco. He's been taking the abuse...she can't break thru his skin, but has taken chunks out of his dorsal fin....he's the footlong algae eater that's harrassed to stick to sides of glass and then some...

It's been 4 hours now since I brought home the "lil" tinfoils...so far so good. no new markings on my catfish as the FH is too interested in the newcomers...BUT....all 3 of the tinfoils have survived so far, and catfish doing same...not any worse.. I just hope my kitty fish doesn't decide to have himself a snack during the night

too mean of a pleco will kill your flowerhorn so stay way from a big armored pleco. It looks like it could cost you a tiger barb or two a month but at the rate they are available it is almost worth it just to keep your flowerhorn away from your catfish. I'd stick with tiger barbs and maybe look into a few other dithers for the flowerhorn if I were you. Other wise chose one fish, they're both big fish there might just not be enough room for 2 fish of such size.

if you wish my honest opinon a good swift smack with a 5lb sledge and your problem with the fh is over.

it is more than likely she will kill that and any other fish in the tank with her as far as I know it is the flowerhorn nature.

all 3 tinfoils surviived the night, and no new markings on my catfish!! The FH tries to chase the tin foils. She still approaches the catfish, but nothing like the last few days of taking chuncks out of him

I'll just have to wait and see. I figured the FH and catfish would be fine in the 265g for life...but, also the catfish grows a lot faster than the fh, and he grew a lot in the last couple months.

I thought the same thing if my catfish has a snack every once and awhile, I will just have to keep replacing the darter fish...hopefully it won't be too often...as long as they stay away from the bottom of the tank...

I"m going to keep my eye out for more tinfoil's about the same size as the ones I got last night
