in order to put a new panel over the old one your going to have to remove the top trim to get the panel in the tank, why not just remove the bottom trim and replace the whole panel? that is unless you do it in 3 pieces like bderick said, but will your parents go for that?
Use your broken tank to make a nother tank higher. Just take out the bottum pannel and add it to the top of another tank that has the same width and length. You will have a line going horrizontally across the center of the glass but it will still look great with fully stocked tank. It's cheap to double your tank size, just costs the amount of the cylicone. There is a thread on how to do this, I will look for it.

Cheaper to just get one 72x24 sheet.

a 4ft tall tank(2 180s stacked) would need much thicker glass than 1/2".
