Thank you for this. I'll read up. I hear about such things every now and then over many years. The government officials are persistent, it seems, and sooner or later they hope to succeed. They will keep making new such propositions after each failed one. I don't think petitions would stop them. Maybe "occupy FWC" by thousands of freedom-deprived and job-deprived people might. Or maybe there is no other way to try to preserve what's left of FL native nature?

I know their actions may look strange on the outside but I doubt they are always in the wrong, perhaps sometimes, or might be even often, but can't be always...
I'm sure they think they are doing what is best. My experience and observation with gov't intervention is they usually succeed in only making things worse.

We got a whitelist here and its s**t. Blacklists are best imo. Keep the nasties out but allow you to keep stuff. Bichirs are legal to own here but not whitelisted so we have a like three species and they're all $$$ I paid $200 bucks for my sen.

Also anyone in FL doing anything bout the holy thursday massacres? I'm a reptile guy at heart and people are talking about it all the way down here. Florida fish and wildlife seem to be in hot water at the moment. Tryna please PETA by doing their bidding to make up for their stuff up.
For those who have not seen this...
Also killed a boa which is not a restricted species. The so-called FWC experts thought the boa was a python. Pythons have had a foothold in the everglades for years. There is no means to eradicate them at this point. What sense does what they did make??? I have no words for this type of gov't over reach and stupidity. The reptile community has called for the immediate firing of these officers via Governor Desantis. If I was that shop owner i would be suing these morons.

Yet people are moving there in droves.
And many are regretting that move and leaving within a short time.
The states noted for low wages, high property cost and property tax, not to mention insurance and all major storms that get worse each year. Couple that with dealing with tourist. There are several articles discussing the boomerang effect that once ppl live there for a short time the novelty and vacation feel wears off and reality sets in.

I’d rather four seasons and sane Ppl

I don't know, it's hard to see much boomerang when it's the fastest-growing state in the US. I'm sure some newcomers leave any state, for any number of reasons, but the sustained growth of population in FL goes back decades and certainly doesn't seem to be slowing. I'm neither pro- nor anti-FL in terms of its governance, quality of life, etc., having only visited briefly and therefore having little direct experience or knowledge. I do have family who've moved there and loved it, and the main reason was *less* gov't interference than they'd experienced elsewhere. I can't vouch for it, but they report having happily left behind what they perceived to be gov't overreach in terms of school redistricting, overtaxation, and much more. When the traffic mostly goes in one direction, and keeps going that way for so long, it's hard to argue that the place is unappealing on net. I'm originally from MA, now in PA, and I really like cooler weather + change of seasons, but a lot of others sure seem to like it in FL.

Different strokes, what I see in Florida is irresponsible choices and the removal of safety and civil liberties- it will come back to bite them. This next generation won’t stand for that garbage.

I rented a house in Florida for the month of January in 2020, left after 2 weeks. The Dominican Republic, Bahamas and Mexico all feel like way safer places to be. The nationalism on full display was like going to a hillbilly version of Cold War russia.
Nothing that state does that negatively impacts its residents surprises me at this point.

Not sure where you are getting your info from but FL is a very affordable state to live in. Property costs are not high through the majority of the state and property taxes are a lot lower than many states. Wages are lower in some areas but so is the cost of living. Hurricanes run in cycles with typically 15-20 years of lower activity and 15-20 years of greater activity. We are currently in the greater activity phase. I used to live in RI back in the early 90's. My property taxes on my home in SW FL which is currently worth $400 K is half that of the taxes I was paying on my RI home that was valued at $130k back in 1993. So 3 decades later I am paying half of what I paid for property taxes in the 90's on a home in RI with a 1/3 of the value. In RI I was also paying a thousand a year in property taxes on 2 vehicles and having state taxes bled from my paycheck.
I have lived here for 23 years now. Snowbird season sucks, you are spot on on that and it gets worse every year as more people move here. Believe me I wish the boomerang effect was true but the fact is that more people are moving and staying here each year. Don't believe everything you read. Homeowners insurance rates have gone up due to storm activity but the savings in taxation and cost of living help even that out. FL has its' issues but so does every other state.
This statement explains a lot regarding your view of FL " The nationalism on full display was like going to a hillbilly version of Cold War russia." Too bad you had to drag politics into this and show your hand.

On one hand, when government injects itself into anything, nothing good comes of it. On the other hand, the irresponsibility of those who have no business owning a dog or a cat, never mind exotics, is creating a burden on native ecosystems, as well as the animals they toss aside. While government intervention isn't the solution, it's apparent the unrestricted trade and ownership of exotics isn't working either. If you need to prove to the state that your responsible enough to drive a car, handle a gun for hunting, or where and how to set a trap, cut hair, practice medicine, or practice law, than perhaps it wouldn't be a stretch to prove your responsible enough to own an exotic animal. The movement for regulation should not come from the heavy hand of bureaucracy, but from those who are passionate about exotics and their well being.
