No you would not need a permit to keep your cichlid regardless of type. The state is actually very lenient other than pirahnas and rays.

They even sell them in every pet store and fish farms. During summer many are giving them away on craigs list as so many fry in their pond though this yr might be different due to many pond fish dieing.

People catch them and keep them by the buckets full (cast net ) to eat and take them home alive with FWC wardens right there and others like myself only catch and release with FWC wardens there .

Its the pirahna that they want dead .

I think the state(Miami) has accepted Cichlids ,see's them as revenue as many come to fish for them and doesn't see them as a problem.

Actually I got in a crap load of trouble for trying to sell pbass and other cichlids I acquired from my canal by FWC, they said I wasnt even allowed to keep them for myself, which is why I got my dealers license so they wouldnt harrass me, but I guess it just depends on when and who catches you. No one even knew the laws, none of them even knew what the dealers license covered, but I fixed everything and am legit although I only got the license so I could keep them myself, I wouldnt try selling them again.

Legally wihtout a fish dealers license bringing a fish home alive is a violation and there are still limits on how many (although it took me about a month to get someone to tell me the actual rules cause no one knew and everyone told me something different).

See that's what I thought I've heard before as well. Lots of talk comes up on this site about members wanting to go to southern Florida to catch various cichlid species and then bring them back home with them.

You didnt find dead geckos?

Lots dead babies here none recovered from being "frozen" .

I only see the geckos here in the summer/ spring, I never see them during the winter. i suppose they either die off or are hiding someplace warm

my two plecostomus i wild caught died in our pond, nothing native
i also found 3 canetoads huddled under a brick, so i did away with them

PB i can see because they are stocked by the state and fall under game fish but surprised cichlids.
I see cichlids for sale on craigs list all the time esp summer and pet stores ,fish farms sell them but like you now imagine they have dealership license.

People catch them all the time and take them home in buckets and never saw a warden (rare times I have seen one) say anything.

I do agree the state is horribly run. I was told different things and got different emails from the FWC which I saved and printed when I asked about snake collecting.
One said I needed fishing license other said I didnt need anything if Florida resident and 3rd said as long as on private land anyone regardless of what state they are visiting from ,no license required can collect.

All state wildlife depts seem to leave much to be desired but this place takes the take.

I dont see them daily either but when days in 70s/80s which start again tommorrow and nights in 60s I see them.

ALL the green anoles in my yard "frozen" to branches died but not the browns go figure . I think because the browns stayed on the ground which was warmer while the greens stayed up on bush's ,etc and with that wind a cold rain it killed them.

Just speculatiuon.

As far as being a private owner you can own cichlids inside your house or yard pond.

I dont know his situation but the PB thing may have been the problem or started it.
