I just got my florida gar at my lfs for 15 dollars. Any way they said tht it was eating rosy reds. Should I keep feeding him rosies. I would like to get him to eat pellets. Any ideas on how to do this!

I've read that it's going to take some time to wean him/her off of live food. Don't remember the exact time that u sould attempt to wean them off, but someone will chime in soon. Curious to know myself.

First of all how big is it? If it's a little smaller then you want to continue feeding it feeders until it gets bigger, 7"+. Once it gets around that size you can experiment with different types of foods by not feeding it feeders and only introducing the food you want it to eat. If it doesn't eat for about a week, give it some feeders and then repeat those steps again. It should be eating what you want in no time.

when i first got my florida gar all it ate was pellets, it took a good couple of months for it to eat anything else. now it eats pretty much everything i put in the tank for it, silversides, crickets, pellets, bloodworms, shrimp, prawns, and every once in awhile feeders.

there is nothing wrong with live if u feed a large enough variety and QT ur live before they get it. i still feed live(though i did just get my big gar to eat shrimp)

I have a Florida Gar as well they will try anything at least once before making their mind, try pellets, feeders, & shrimp, BUT CUT THE SHRIMP UP, BECAUSE IT'S VERY HARD FOR THEM TO SLOW BIG PIECE'S OF FOOD!!!!!!! And may die, because they breath oxygen & when they go up for some air they won't be able get any.

Mine likes floating pellets cichlid brand usually works well.

Mine would only eat live food until around 8" then overnight, it started eating pellets. It then would not eat anything else for quite a while, and now eats a mix of live, pellets, live earthworms, small pieces of tilapia (loves that!), shrimp, and I have even caught him munching on small pieces of zucchini that I feed a pleco! Hang in there, And good luck! Congrats on the gar!

I starved my 14 inch florida for 3 weeks and still wouldn't eat pellets, I gave up and started to feed earthworms. It would eat like 2-3 times a week tops, then all of a suddenn it came to the top and waited. I stuck a floating cichlid pellet in and he tried to eat it(was too hard for him), but still he at least tempted. I'm pretty excited that he at least tried to eat it. So Really IDK, I starved and he still wouldn't eat pellets, I think he felt more comfortable after a few months and that's what helped.
