Florida Gar pond tankmates

xander: my posts are based on my experiences in over 40 years in the hobby. sorry if they don't always match those of others. as always, your mileage may vary.

now i did extrapolate a bit on this one, but i figured that if it's currently working in a similar size pond with dempseys and oscars for me, then mayas should also work, they are not too much more aggro than jd's ime. the same pond also currently has multiple plecos and has had sunnies (not greens) and suwannee and smallmouth bass (up to about 8") in the past.

ok, i admit that i have never owned a bowfin, but am still looking. however, i remember a thread (if not here, it may have been on nanfa) where gar and bowfin compatability in a 300 gal rubbermaid was questioned and the responses were generally positive.

by the way, florida gar live in quite a few lakes and ponds in the company of many of these same introduced species, which is why i tried some of them in the first place. trying new combinations of fish is something i enjoy with my small ponds.

i'm not as well versed in gar caretaking as you and several others on this forum, but that doesn't mean you need to ridicule differences of opinion. forums like this should be sources of information and experiences from and for all members, not just a few.

by the way, my name is not dude. or it hasn't been in a very long time. you may call me sir.

well-stated response. i think xander was just jumping on the suggested combo of cichlids and plecos with gars, which generally doesn't go well in aquaria, but (at least with the cichlids) could be defused somewhat in a pond. plecos, however, are generally not a good idea because of their slime-sucking habits, and it only takes one incidence to be potentially fatal for the gar.

the bowfin combo has always been one of debate...in a tank, it's generally not advised as bowfin are often quite boisterous and can bully gars. again, in a pond there may be more luck.

i generally agree that going with natives or some introduced species from the area is the best bet. one could also just go with more Florida gars as well.--

apologies for my rash bashing of your comment. thanks sol for getting me out of this "mess". as eariler stated, my comment was at the suggested combination of gars & cichlids/plecos. which if you did a search, you'd see it has been the cause of an almost ridiculous amount of trouble and discussion. i didn't have a problem with the rest of your post. and i appreciate the well versed response.

i have looked back at quite a few posts regarding plecos with gars and will definitely keep a closer eye on this in my ponds. i always appreciate advice and input and this is no exception. no offense meant to anyone on the forum. Xander, you may call me dude anytime. LOL

RobE - have fun fishing and best of luck with your setup. Let me know if you find any bowfin!

glad to see this was cleared up, pretty sure i came off a little over the edge with that comment, cant figure out what got into me. anyways good luck RobE

Thanks guys, im sure it would be more fun fishing for them anyway.;)

Theres no way as far north as i am. I have heard of some being seen in south fl like miami area.

A little update. I havent added anything new to the pond. I sure havent had time to do much fishing either.:( I Went to a local nature preserve this weekend and saw so many incredible looking gars out in the wild i wanted to go that route with my pond. So my next question is how many florida/spotted can i fit in my pond without it getting to crowded. Thanks for the input, Rob.
