florida gar?????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay, a few things:
  • Gar Growth
  • Florida gars tend to max out at 18" to 22" in captivity.
  • Florida gars tend to grow very fast for their first 12" or so, but growth tends to slow down drastically after that point.

I got a Florida Longnose Gar from PetSolutions. They said on there that the approximate size was 40-60". Is this true or does your 18"-22" figure apply here as well?

they can get larger then that, but the key words i think you missed were....in captivity. i personally have a florida that is 22" and it is around 2yrs old. so it will still get bigger, but how much is unknown.

thats a fair old size then, so it would/might be possable to keep in a large tank of mixed cichlids 10 or so with 5 red hooks, ive got around 3000 litre tank with 1 bir and one 7-800mm fire eel lived with them for years now ,The gar today he ate white bait from my fingers he seams very calm and eats very well now ,my fire eel eats the same way to..

As has been already stated gars and cichlids are not a recomended combination. I'm assuming the 5 red hooks are silver dollars. Gars tend to attack silver fish. Also they might spook the gar.

i have looked in the gar section for tank mates so as long as hes at least the same size or bigger than the others should help, hes bigger now than what he was and he had no problems last time for 3 weeks, usally show up early on /but some times with age and size, and now he feeds really well it got to be worth a try i will get him to 12 inch first i reckon 1 more month will do it, hes looking fatter all the time ,i will let you know the progress if he not in the right enviroment and relaxed i will remove him ,but the others only seamed bothered about each other and not that often really, but most of them have all grown up from 2-3 inch fish ive had most of them for years now and it was a case of try diffrent ones to gether and getting rid of the agro ones, they all have diffrent temperments to a certin extent and they are all simlier size .

wow, this made no sense at all. if it's in reference to using silver dollars with gars i would highly advise against it. i would advise, however, using periods in long posts.--

if many people mixed gars with cichlids and red hooks are not silver dollers they get 10 inch plus look a bit like pirana may be.

myleus rubripinnis. i see some people call them sliver dollers tho but really silver doller only get to 6 inch odd, sorry my spelling and gramer is abit crap never was very good at school in english.you think these might be a problem !.
or will some of these issuse arise when he get to full size .
no one seams up beat at all about adding a gar to a large cichlid communtiy is my idea doomed ?
