Florida "wild" salvini

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think it matters what fancy label you put on it, as long as it's clear to the buyer what the fish are and where they came from. Everything else is gray area and opinion.

The JDs in N Dak are in a lake that is kept artificially warm year round, by a power plant or industrial source, and are restricted to only the warm area of the lake.

What I would like to know, is where all the cool Cichlids, like Jags, Salvini, Oscars, etc, are being found in FL? I'd love to fish / net for them. I have done this a few times, but have only found Mayans and Tilapia, nothing else.

Theres different areAs that are more densely populated with one and then not another. For example if you go near the airport you wont see midas, or others. I personally in my area would couldnt drop a line in before hooking a midas or jag or mayan with nothing but a wet bread ball. Yet my friend who lives only 1 mile away never sees jags. And i personally never see salvini. Oscars are also not in my area but 1 mile over. Its complicated lol. There are def more populations in localized areas.

To the op. i would call them whatever you want but include the florida part.

These Florida threads KILL ME!!

Interesting thoughts on this. I can't see an F0 label ever being appropriate on any generation of ferel, non-endemic species when its known that the introduction was by man and that the fish introduced was more likely than not tank-raised and/or line bred (e.g. oscars).

I say they are invasive wild caught from Florida. They are coming from an established population with many years of breeding so I don't know how you can't consider them wild. I posted a thread years ago on my old username with some pics of some Salvini's from my local mosquito ditch/canal, but the 2010 cold freeze has pushed them further south.

I've never seen any in a LFS that could compare to the colors on them so to the OP I would say its a good investment especially if your seller gives you a breeding pair. The peacocks and Mayans are starting to pair up since this cold front has passed so I would say spring is near and your chance of a pair are very good.

(Edit: just saw the date stamp on the last pic. 3/4 is right around the corner. The spawn will be on soon.)

Here's some old pics of what your most likely going to get. I'm going to have to do some fishing this weekend and see if I can find a pair for a spare tank I have.

I've seen some of those pics on google searches. I've seen a couple my supplier has caught herself and I agree they are very colorful. So far I'm getting a pair and several young fish.
