Feeding the proper amount.

What is the precise way to determine how much to fed your fish? Is it determined by the weight of the fish? If so, what’s the ratio? And how can you estimate the weight of the fish? I’ve noticed on some aquarium tv shows they actually remove the larger animals and weight them when they need to...

As far as color, your tank appears fairly bright, with that fish I would paint the back & sides of your tank black. I believe that your fish is acclimating to its new surroundings. A bright environment can wash out color in a fish, as they attempt to blend in with their surroundings. Also, in the vid & pics your fish was flaring at other fish, so it was worked up into a frenzy, which can also have a great bearing on coloration.

It seems that I no longer have most of my FH pics kicking around, including ones of my old school kamfa. But I did find one, raised in a 125 gallon with a black background. This tank also had a light covering of grey gravel as substrate. Notice how the color red was brought out with the darker environment. I believe he was approx 11" in that pic, so full grown. What a mutt compared to what's readily available today! lol

but also spent a year or two in a tank with with darker gravel substrate …..






But no matter what, I always kept my FH in tanks with dark/black backgrounds to bring out the best color in the fish. Always, even though at that time many FH enthusiasts would say that you should never keep a FH in a tank with black background. Go figure.

My old fish were alright red when kept with dark blue background but I used to feed them humpy head and ever red, so may be chemicals or hormones in food were the reason

This tank is short term housing, I will move sometime this year and get a upward of 75 gallon tank, will add a darker background on that one. For now I will let it be.

Those fish look to me like they simply had good genetics geared towards the color red, and in a darker environment the red color popped nicely.

The one with hard kok was given to me for free by a friend, he had good red color since he was like 2 inches. The one with bigger kok was purchased from a reputable hobbyist seller, he had less red till he was above 6 inches. I have video of them when were babies.

I'll usually feed my FH 10-12 pellets, they wouldn't touch any more pellets after that. I have the mixed pellets with Hikari bio-gold plus, okiko platinum and Alife (HaiFeng).
