Damn, even goldfish aren't that cheap.

:) I am not kidding..

I had got these as feeders...Ended up keeping them for a little while longer to keep a tank cycled.

Here are pics of one of them (5 cent Flower Horns)

Hi everyone,

My LFS is currently selling a high pearl kamfa labeled as a flowerhorn for $50 apiece. Does this type of flowerhorn develop a big hump on their heads? I'm a newbie, only four months into the hobby and I don't want to spend a big amount of money on a fish that will end up sick or dead because of my lack of experience. I currently have juvenile SA cichlids and they are doing fine. I just want to try my hands on a flowerhorn. By the way, the higher breed flowerhorns are going for $250-450 here. So here goes my questions:

1. Was this type of flowerhorn reasonably priced?
2. What's the difference between this and the high breed FW when it comes to size and appearance?
3. Are they hardy and easy to keep like oscars and GTs?
4. Can I keep it with my other SA cichlids in a properly sized tank?

Thank you. Your responses would be greatly appreciated. This was originally posted on another thread but was advised I'll get better answers here.

Litttlewang,

With Flowerhorn, you'll get for what you pay for. I was in your shoe before. I used to buy cheap Flowerhorn at LFS for $7, then upgraded to $50, $75. The list was just keep going. This was how I discovered, Price range from $50 to $150, you will get the color but the hump usually not there. If it was, it was a small hump. $180 and up will guarantee for a nice flowerhorn. These fish are really hard. They will fit in any environment. They won't die easily.
If you look at my picture and compare with a $50 FH, you will see a big different. Usually people will look for the flower mark, hump, color and nice fan tail. If the fish meet all that requirement, then it's a good FH.
You can keep other cichlids with a flowerhorn but you do need a bigger tank with plenty of rocks for other fish to hide. 125 gallons is a good start.

Thank you so much for the informative answers Gotkok. Have a good one.
