just paranoid since its my one and only FH.

i think i read a thread on mfk, and someone related fish scratching to guys scratching our balls

but i'm still listening to JP and upping the temp and adding some salt. I made the mistake of not listening to him before about purchasing a certain fish, now i'm paying for it.

Yeah you will not go wrong by being cautious. But, if you change you're mind and decide to send him my way let me know!:grinno:

Yes! Listen to Jp!
Whenever Ive had fish scratching it didnt end up well.
Usually a fungus..some say ick.
But when it happened to me it was a fungus.

That's also a possibility:D Usually when fungus are present, it's visible to your eyes. In this case, you need to treat it with antibacterial/anti-fungal meds. I would just try high temp and salt first for this case as well. If things don't clear up in a week or two, try melafix/pimafix combo. As a last resort, use Fungus away by jungle(this will hurt/kill off your BB colony)

Happy new years everyone!

Rubbing rocks is called flashing or glancing and it is never a good sign. Parasitic infestation is the normal cause, not alwys Ich, possibly velvet / flukes / anchor worms / chillodonela / cosita. If there is no visible change in slime layer or color and no visible parisites I would look at the possibility of flukes. If the fish ahs been doing it for long periods of time and no other signs have developed, it may just be nothing. In my experience fish don' flash unless there is a problem in the making.

if they arent scratching constantly then i guess it would be fine but wouldnt hurt to be cautious.

i up'd the heat, added some salt yesterday, did a small water change today... i haven't seen him scratch yet, but i havne't sat there and observed him for hours at a time. he does seem alot more active, probably cuz of the heat increase. so far so good.

eric thit type of disease is called velvet disease. use copper safe and follow the directions. if you dont want to use any kind of meds to your flowerhorn buy a uv sterilizer it works like wonders no disease and much healthier fish.

Ive noticed fish doing this. Ive heard that flashing is normal once in awhile. Its as normal as fish yawning. If theres lots of flashing then you should be cautious. Ive heard some fish flash to try and remove old scales.

But before adding all these meds and raising temp, you should observe longer and do something when you do see signs of disease. Doing what you are doing can stress and kill the fish.

Make sure to have more than one symptom of a disease before you declare the fish having a disease.

UV sterilizers are awesome! If you can afford one, I suggest one in every tanks.

Velvets are visible to our naked eyes like ich, but a bit smaller, more spread, and brownish color to them.
