Probably not, like I and others have said your best bet for a tank mate would be a spiny cactus pleco, I can't think of anything that could survive a fh long term

I really am sorry that it was a bunch incompatible tank mates but thats just the way flowerhorns are
I think 40 gallon breeder is better than 55 for flowerhorns. They need the turning space, 40 breeder has more surface area and difference in actual volume is not much (55 gallon holds 48 gallons and 40B holds 44 gallon).
If he's doing that you might be overfeeding. You shouldn't need a fish to eat that food.
I usually keep pleco to eat the algae on glass.
Owen_96.... I have been keeping flowerhorns since 2001. Each fish is different. I have had King Kamfas that live happily in a 125 gallon with several parrot fish and a three silver dollars. Then I have had King Kamfas that will smash down dividers and do anything to kill any fish that that they can see. I had a Magma that would soak my floors splashing water trying to rip my face off. It was a pain in the butt because I had to keep a towel by the tank because if you got near the tank he was splashing water bitting the glass. He hated EVERYTHING and EVERYONE.
So honestly most are best kept on their own. I NEVER keep plecos with flowerhorns. They have spines that can really hurt your flowerhorn when he bites the pleco. Which is what happens and often causes a nasty bacterial infection on you flowerhorn which can lead to death.
I would put a background on your tank. That will most likely help your flowerhorn feel much more comfortable. Anytime I have set up a tank without a background my fish seem very jumpy and dart around the tank. I put a background on and they almost instantly calm down.
If you only feed three pellets and he is spitting them out he might not like the food you are feeding.
