hopewell,va
I currently have a nice 6" flowerhorn(ZZ) and i was just wondering what, if any, would be the problem with putting her out side for a month or so. She would be in a 200 gallon pond with 850 gph filtration and weekly water changes. the only other occupants of the pond would be my 5 plecos, algae controll team. The water chemistry, as of today at 9:00PM, was 7.6 ph, 0 ammonia, 0nitire, 10ppm nitrate, mid hard GH/ CH. There are 7 small goldfish in there now though, maybe thats one issue, i don't know.

Has any one tried it before and if so, how did it work out. Like color enhansement, growth, and attitude.

By the way the goldfish would not be living with her at all. She's a certified killer:naughty:

Thanks in advance,
David.

Why would you do that :(
You wouldn't see the beautiful Zhen Zou 's Body pattern and stuff
Crazy Idea :nilly: :screwy:

It would just be for a short while. I thought maybe she would get some nicer colors from the natural light and the plethera of grasshoppers that jump in daily to the pond, no i don't use pestcides in my yard. At best i would miss out on 2 months of looking at her but if she would grow faster and better, eat better from all of the live food, and if she would be happier, i'd do it in a heart beat. I mean she would be moving from a 4'x18" foot print to a 5'x3' foot print. That's like moving from a studio appartment to a three bed room house , who wouldn't like it.

I'd just like to know if any one has tried it and if the were any issues or great improvements that were noticed.

I feel like my pleasure could be put on hold for a few months for her to have some fun, that's all.

hi
i have all my fh in a outdoor pond
but i'm in india a tropical country.
you have left out the temperature of the pond which is the main thing.
the only problem is they look ugly and dark when viewed from the top unlike koi.

Your are absolutly right, i did leave out the temp, sorry. It's running 83 degrees right now.
Also i'm not to worried about her looks in the pond. I just want her to come out looking better then when she goes in.

Flowerhorns is a piece of art, not pond fishes...you wouldn't toss a high value painting into the garage too would you? :D

Oh, and what is the reason for the flowerhorn in the pond anyways?

Big_One: To answer your question about the reason i would like to put her in the pond, I think that she would get better colors in the pond and she would be happier. Reasons i believe this are, She would have lots of live food stuffs like grass hoppers and crickets, and the natural sun light has made every cichlid, i've put in the pond, glow with outstanding color. So to answer your question about the painting in the garage, I most definitly would put it in the garage if it would look even better than when i put it in there.

"dont do it imo, plus the fh might kill the plecos an such ;)"
Thanks for the input Flipstylex. I may just move the plecos inside when i move the goldfish inside. thanks for the warning, i didn't even think of that.

Well other than people saying i wouldn't be able to admire my art piece, which is valid, i haven't heard anything bad about putting her in the pond. So i think i'm going to do it. Better yet i'll post before and after pics so we can see if it was worth the effort in the end. Thank you too everyone who has replied and i'll get the pics up asap.

Thanks,
David

I agreee with the above opinions. Dont do it...though the FH is a tough fish it will cetainly put some stress on him. And like mentioned earlier, why? I have a ZZ FH and would never do it simply because he's too good lookin'. Is it subject to rain? If so, def. not! I understand trying to enhance his colors with making feel like he's got more room and openness, I think there is much more to it. Just my opinion is to leave him inside where you can enjoy him. However, if you are set on it, just keep an eye on him with his aggressiveness towards the plecos and definitely the GF. Good luck, either way I hope it all turns out for the best.

I think it's a great idea... Simply the fact that he's moving to such a bigger space is reason enough to do it in my opinion. Your water parameters are good, so go for it!
