Flowerhorns and outdoor ponds?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for all of the reply's. I really thinnk she's liking it. Day two went off without a hitch. She ate bit my finger, and played hunt the pleco, so i think she's doing well. Thanks for the info on the ammonia, I do a 50% water change on the pond every week so i should be good, hopefully. Plus i've got a 850 gph filtration system on it as well.

Thanks again,
DAvid

One other thing you might want to think about is do any of your neighbors use pesticides be cause the bugs may leave their yards and make it to yours just a thought.

Wild bill: As far as the neibors using pesticides, That's a big negitive, none of my nieghbors even keep their yards looking nice. As a matter of fact idon't have a nieghbor on my right and the on to the left hasen't been in her yard at all in over a year. But I will keep an eye out for anyone spraying anything in their yards.

Thanks for the reminder,
David

Well here we are week one under are belt. She has gotten pretty used to all the rituals of pond life now and is loving it. One problem though, the water is green soup. My uv sterilizer went out on me. It did the water change for last week for me. I went out at 9:00 am for the morning feeding and the water was about normal, at 12:00 the water was over half gone. so i checked everything and it was the sterilizer. so now i'm just going to have to change more water to keep the water clarity where i can tolleerate it.

Well there's your week one update and fire power for all the skeptics, lol. All crtisism welcome, and even making fun of me as well.

Sorry no pics due to water clarity, will post after water change wens. or thrusday.

So after about a month in the pond i brought me FH back inside. I hadn't seen her for about 2 days, fearing the worst I started draining the pond to find her. finally after the pond was half empty she arouse from the bottom. With Ick all over her. Pissed off and scared, i brought her in to the 75 and begain treatment. It cleared after about 24 hrs. and her color was well outstanding. she was very dark when I put her out in the pond and now she is bright and full of life. We had some 65 degree nights for abot a week and i guess that's what caused the ick.

so for all of you who said it wasn't a good thing, you were right and wrong at the same time. Her colors got better but she got ick "Dang it!!!!!!"

Oh by the way now she has a new boyfriend, Red devil. I traded some africans for two about the same size as her. I put the biggest one in with her in my 125 gallon and they love it.

Pics this weekend,
David

i think it would be fine for a little while but the flowerhorn may terrorize the plecos and make shore the p.h. is correct for the fh

That's weird that she got ick. My friend and I have never had a problem w/ our fry getting ick outside. They're still out there now and last year they were out until like October. At least the FH is okay now.

Ya that's what I say to, at least she's fine now. But the colder temp caused my pond(180gallons) to drop in temp really quick. It's the only thing i can think of that would have caused her to get it. oh well it's all over now though.

flowerhorns need bright environment to bring out their color. also you have to be maintaining 82-86 degree in order for the flowerhorn not to get ick. everyone learns from mistakes and as long as the fish is ok and well thats all it matters. :)
