HONORURU, HAWAII!
Aloha everyone!

Well i scored a Fluval 405 from a friend, only to set it up and have it not work...Here's the problem in a nutshell:

when the unit is running, it seems to not generate suction. i can prime the unit with the little pump lever as long as i want, and nothing.

set up is correct, unit is not very old nor has it been abused. i took it apart and learned the entire thing before even plugging it in, so im confident in my abilities to assess the matter...but this is just like WTF WHY ARE YOU NOT PUMPING>!>!!:!??!?!!>....ive taken it apart and reassembled it many times. sigh.

ive already got the diagrams printed and trying to see if anythign needs to be replaced...
should i start off with a new impeller? i dont really wanna crack open the motor assembly housing, i might just FUBAR it in that act. :nilly:

any help would be appreciated guys, thanks!

try pulling out the output hose and putting it on the ground with open the flow lever. then try to pump the water down, but when the water starts rushing into the canister, quickly close the flow lever on the output, put the hose back up into the tank, turn on the filter and reopen the flow lever on the output hose.

is there any cracks on the impeller plastic cover? ive had the same problem, make sure the unit is unplugged and water is topped off. then prime it until bubbles are out. then plug it in. if that doesnt work. plug the unit in and tilt the filter sideways, slowly bringing it up to level.

if you are trying to prime it with the canister full of water it is very hard to do. Try starting with the canister empty and unpluged then prime it. After a few pumps of the primer you will hear the water start running into the canister and bubbles coming out of the out put line, after the bubbles stop plug it in and it should go. With the canister full of water it acts like a vapor lock and the water from priming can't push out the water in the canister. I have 4 of these and it always works for me.

when the can is full and you try to prime it, it is like trying to get a syphon started in a full bucket of water.

I have the same issue with one of my old 405's. What I do is prime the unit the the primer. Then plug in the unit and I take and hook up a power head to the intake hose. I just let the power head run for about a minute or so the remove it. After I have done that it seems to run just fine untill I unplug it then I have to repeat the above. Give it a try. I like you have taken mine apart many times, and also replace the seals and impeller. Good luck

the same thing happened with my 405, after further inspection I realized that my filter had been sucking up a small amount of sand overtime, caused a little blockage....so I took the thing apart and rinsed everything out (tubes, carbon, spongey-things, and hoses) also be sure to check that little black rubber ring that actually allows the whole unit to seal...I took mine off and repositioned it making sure there were no gaps. After a good shake (cuz I lost my patience) I plugged it in and prayed to god and she primed right up :) Hope it works for ya :)

The primer pumps on a lot of filters are rubbish. When I set my 405 up I did it the old fashioned way and sucked on the end of the hose to get the syphon goin. Aim it into a bucket and just switch the aquastop valve off when it eventually flows.
When you open the valve up again once it is attached to the filter it will fill the unit, wait a couple of minutes until all is quiet withing the filter then turn it on. The pump should return the water no problem.

i have got fluval 405 but i can not get it to work i have tried everything most of the parts are new but still nothing it makes a rattling noise when started up any please

Double check your rubber seal on the motor housing to the canister set up
if it is broken or cracked,
brittle you will not have much suction try to put a little petroleum jelly around it
