Fluval 405 vs. Rena XP4

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am going to throw in the wild card...

EHEIM!!! i just think that fluval quality are cheap... they break easily..

Rena not so much.. i do like the XP4 series.. with 4 stage of media tray.. thats quite a lot of combination.

However, Eheim products are upgradable.. they offer lots of attachments compare to fluval and Rena, and their motors last a long time... I have yet to hear an incident where a EHEIM breaks down after a prolong use.. (unless you dump the thing in water or an accident).

I highly recommend EHEIM.. if I was to invest in something that i dont intend to have it break down on me.. i'll spend a few more dollars for an eheim..

I gotta vote xp3 as well, got two and an xp4. The extra tray in the xp4 is nice but not worth the extra cash. They've all been running nonstop(other than cleanings) for about two yrs now without any problems. Cleaning is ultra simple, and it self primes after, just plug the hoses back in, nothing to it.

i was planning on getting my hands on an xp3 today since my fluval 405 keeps having all these failure on it. but my LFS dont carry them so instead i got me the FX5 and i gotta say that filter is pretty amazing but huge and also smart for stopping the motor to let air out and all that... you should get that. get your bang out of your bucks.....

I've had the Fluval 405 running on my tank for about a year & a half. No issues.

I have no experience with the Renas, but I do like how they can incorporate their smart filters directly into the canister intake.
