Fluval Evo Saltwater Startup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My numbers look good. Between the live sand, Dr Tim and the borrowed media tank cycled fairly quickly. I did add three blue legged hermit crabs 4 days in to help the cycle. Honestly I could have an entire tank of these guys as they are fun to watch. Added a single clown two days ago and some additional Tim’s to offset the new load. Ammonia spiked up a little but was back to zero next morning. Going to let this settle for another week and make sure ammonia and nitrites remaining at zero then add second clown.

Tank looks great! The purple is really nice...it will be a shame when algae starts coming.
Are you going to pair the clown or have a solo one?

The plan is to pair it. The main reason I didn’t get a second one was the shop I was at only had the one. I really liked the look of this one so decided to buy it. I am also scared of adding bioload to a tank this small and figured it would be better to slowly add stock. In addition to the three crabs I plan to get another clown, some snails and possibly a shrimp.
Down the line once established I would like to add 4 or 5 different corals. Never had corals before so not sure if this would be too many for a 13.5.

I have read that limiting the light will help a tank get over the “ugly algae” phase much quicker? Any truth to that. I have only been putting light on for 20-30 per day right now.

Blackouts help with algae but it would probably just slow it. My tank is 6 months old and only just getting past the uglies. Best bet is to ride it out and get a lot of astrea snails.
I have 20+ coral species, some large colonies, and the tank still feels empty.
You could fit up to four fish in there. Mostly gobies or something tough that can handle clowns. They are like cichlids as far as aggression goes, not terrible but once nesting they are nasty. I would recommend a pistol shrimp and shrimp goby. They have a symbiotic relationship that is really fun to watch. Other good species are royal grammas (or other basslets), firefish, clown goby, neon goby, cardinal fish, and small hawk fish species, just to name a few.

Forgive my naivety but don’t the corals grow, some fairly fast? I was thinking that 4 or 5 would then spread. Or am I way off base here?
As for adding other fish. I may. As I said I want to go fairly slow and make sure the tank stabilizes and that I can maintain the tank adequately. If I find that the numbers are staying in check and my schedule allows I will look to add more. (I say that now but first time I walk into a store and there is a cool fish it will probably walk out).

Depends on the coral but yes they all grow. The problem is when you get corals and they start doing well you start looking at others and that's when the addiction kicks in. Depending on your first corals, what kind, you may or may not be able to get more based on space.

Just make sure you quarantine fish. I made the mistake of not doing that + buying from petco. Four dead fish (velvet) and a 90 day fallow later I got 2 ocellaris clowns who are currently in qt.
As for coral, it depends on what you want. Certain species, especially Xenia and its relatives as well as zoas/palys spread very fast, others like many lps are painfully slow growers. It’s nice to have a lot of variety on corals, often they are much more eye catching than any fish you put in there. Every species is different, so it’s nice to have a lot of different colors and shapes going in there.

looking good, enjoy while you can ?

Deadeye Deadeye have you used phytoplankton?
I haven’t. Not sure if there have been any via hitchhikers though.
I have considered getting some at the lfs just for extra coral food but haven’t yet. All of my corals (except the mushrooms) are doing great though.
