Fluval Evo Saltwater Startup

And the shrimp is gone, was it the anemone or puffer I’m not 100% sure. There was just a tail remaining and I though the puffer would’ve left a bigger mess. I even thought maybe it just molted and is hiding but it’s been 3 days now. The shrimp was using the anemone as a shelter so it makes it interesting! And sad a bit too

Puffer, probably took it by the head and just wasn’t hungry for the tail.

Had my first causality in the salt tank. As you guys have said; extremely random and unexpected. One day the striped blenny was out and about wolfing down food and the next morning stuck to the filter. Very strange but all the water parameters were in line and the other three fish seem fine.

it happens in new tanks, I feel like saltwater takes almost a year for it to become established and limit those types of losses!

Sorry to hear. Just keep an eye on everyone else, I lost a firefish similarly and suspect it was velvet, just hiding the symptoms very well.

So next question I have for you guys. I ordered my first few corals and I assume the will come attached to some sort of base. Do you just glue the base directly to the rocks? Doesn’t that look kind of bad? Or does the coral eventually grow over the base? Can they be removed and glue the coral directly to the rock.
Thanks in advance.

Depends on the rock and what you like. On your rock you have a bunch of little holes you can use for plugs, you can also glue the plugs wherever you’d like and yea, the idea is that they grow and cover the plug. Just know what you’re getting and what light/flow it likes for placement!

Yup this pretty much sums it up.
Depending on the type of coral like for zoanthids you can later cut out the frag plug and move it to another location and start a new colony. Hard corals like acro and monti will encrust the plug and grow on to the rock hiding the plug. Some corals don't usually come on plugs. When I propogated corals I used plugs and rock rubble mostly rubble as it looked more natural to me and seemed alot of people that purchased from me were happier with the rock. Frag plugs don't cost alot but I had tons of live and rubble so that was cheaper. Some people use tiles, small 1" natural stone tiles. Those are great for growing zoas, remove the tiles from the backer and put a zoanthid in the middle use a razor blade to separate the mat and you have a fragged zoanthid colony.
