Fluval Evo Saltwater Startup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Feeding definitely makes a huge difference. I don’t target feed mine and there is rather slow growth, especially in lps. Though that isn’t all bad because I’m not overwhelmed (except in Xenia).
One frogspawn I have is under the feeding hatch, so food does occasionally hit it and it is much larger than the rest.

What are the biggest setbacks you’ve all faced so far in regards to the coral? I’m sort of assuming everyone here is using RO/DI? Any upgrades in filters or lights you’ve found crucial? I’m a little heavy into the biome diversification (thanks BRS) and seeing if I can get a few rock pieces or some sand from a local store that has some beautiful saltwater tanks.

I feed once weekly. The corals that don’t have “mouths” I use a watered down solution of reef roids and shoot the spray around the corals polyps. The others I thicken it up almost to a paste and drop it right in. Duncan is great watching its mouth open and pull the food in.

Feed, keep calc and alk high. I had alot of growth in my zoas and LPs enough to frag on a regular basis and make money.

I am as low tech as I think you can be. I use tap water conditioned with prime. I had the protein skimmer hooked up for a while but stopped using it when I started doing weekly water changes. Other than the heater my tank is straight from the factory. Only use the Reef Crystals to mix water and the only additives I use Seachem reef complete added once weekly.
I measure my tank by the health of my corals and honestly everything except my palys are growing. Palys look great just zero growth. Coraline growth has accelerated in recent months, mostly green but some pink as well.

As far as setbacks I experienced the dirty phase of the tank and for awhile nothing was growing and I lost several corals. I was testing everything weekly but not changing water. Once I started doing weekly water changes and added some snails everything seemed to balance out, virtually no algae and corals started to grow.
