i have old fuvals the 03 line the 04 look nice i got a rena filstar xp3in may and i run it on a heavy stock 55 gal african tank and i like it very much

I don't know why everyone gives these filters so much bad review!
I've had a Fluval 204 MSF running nonstop for three years now. I've never had a problem yet!

Yep, I had a Fluval 403, ran it for over 10 years non stop(besides regular cleaning etc.). The impellor got damaged at some stage and started making a rattling sound. I was too lazy to get it replaced but it still ran great for probably another 3 or 4 years like that rattling away!
I recently replaced it with a home made sump filter because it wasnt big enough for my needs anymore but I still have it for emergency use! I would recommend either eheim or fluval, I dont see how eheims are so much better? Canister filters are just a pump on a bucket with some media in it!?

That's like saying a car is just an engine attached to some axels and wheels.
Everything varies in quality. There are many people who vouch for eheims running for 10 years+, never replacing a part, never leaking etc. They do seem to be the best.
XP3 is quiet. 404 is also quiet. They are all good. I like the Fluval because of the price. XP3 is about $10 more, but it does not come with bio media.
I filled up the 404 with water, the inlet hose is lower than the canister itself. I expected it won't drain because of the level. After filling it, just "pump" the primer several times, plugged it in, and voila. I could barely hear it. I haven't tried the eheim my friend gave me, but it's for a 180 gallon. Not sure what is the model number. It's like a 10 gallon bucket.

I ran a 404 Fluval for about 2 years but I had a reoccuring problem. Whenever there was a power outage the freaking thing would pretty much empty the entire tank all over my parents wood floor!!! 
There's alot of water in a 90 gallon, even if it is on the small side of monster tanks!!
Tried everything including getting a new O-ring seal but nothing worked. Happened twice and ruined two wood floors! all I got to say is FAWK fluvals!! the company wouldn't help us out either, customer service sucks. Do it right the first time and go with a Wet/Dry or at least a big ass hang-on filter. .02

To answer your questions
1) Yes they are of great quality
2) I would use a 204 instead
3) They come with fittings, and yes they can sit under the tank
4) There very easy to clean, almost as easy as a hanging filter.
