I'm thinking of getting one of those for my new tank gonna be a 150 or a 180. I'm glad you posted this makes me feel better about purchasing one.
Fluval FX5 controversy after 1 month of use

in 1 month it got that dirty... my ac110 and eheim pro 2 dont get that bad in 2 months on my 150 with 2 wood munchers and some messy eaters.
Still might get one to replace the ac110, should be cheaper in the long run

i have decided to add another fx5 to my tank along with a 30w UV i am very pleased with mine after mulling over the decision for weeks to buy it or not.
I plan to add a second one was well but only because my Bio load is heavy, once i get my larger tank it will work out perfect as i will have all my biological ready to be moved over. 
I run other filters alongside my FX5, a Fluval 405, and 305 and used to have a 304 too. I am to paranoid to rely on just one filter.
