i was wondering if anyone has hard plumbed a tank using an fx5 as the filter? i wanted to use 1" or 3/4" pvc as the plumbing for the intake and exhaust side( i think this is the right usage of words) of the filter instead of using the provided plumbing that comes with the filter. i just wanted a cleaner look for my filter system that looks like i am using a sump or wet/dry system. if anyone has would would be able to post some pics so that i can see how you have your system. thanks.

you will just need to use hose from the canister to the hard plumbing, then you can still service it normally...

I plan on doing something similar, I am going to go with two intaks and a one output...

I'd recommend putting shutoff valves in the pvc or tygon in addition to using the on/off valve for the Fluval, that way the entire filter can be removed without having to drain the tank down below the bulkheads.

I wouldn't use 3/4 and try and plumb it as clean as possible with the least amount of fittings. Over engineered plumbing systems look cool but cut down the flow.

Those are not needed, just the FX5 shut offs are all that would be needed. You will remove the plumbing the same way as the stock hoses, so the additional shut offs will be a waste of money...

I've never actually seen an FX5 in person, do the valves come off of the top of the filter? Even if they do, it still really wouldn't be a waste of money, a secondary shutoff in case a valve breaks would be a good backup to have. I have a 404 with the built in shutoff and still use secondary valves just in case. For about $11.00 it's worth having.
