Thanks for your input. Yes I do have sand as my substrate. When I install my next tank for them in the summer I shall be going bare bottom. The flow rate is still strong but yes I have heard washing/swishing sounds from within the canister. The only conundrum remaining is the fact that the other FX5 at the other end of the tank never misses a beat. I am currently waiting on Hagen UK's response.

I'd be very interested to hear Hagen's response, If you could cut and paste it here it would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Here it is, received today....
Thank you for your email. I am sorry to learn you are experiencing difficulties with your FX5. There may be several reasons for the air re-circulation/misting with your FX5.

1. Intake is too near an air stone, another filter or protein skimmer, and is sucking in air from this source.
2. There is not enough distance between intake and output. There should be at least 4 feet distance between, if this is not possible try and use tank décor to achieve this.
3. Air pockets in media. Remove some media: Filter is more effective if not too full of media.
4. Too much media-see above
5. Rubber adaptors not submersed in water. Ensure they are fully submerged.

Could you let me know if this is a constant problem or if it only happens at certain times, after the self purge etc?

I look forward to your reply.

Kind regards,

If you look on the underside of the lid you will see that there is a clear, small diameter plastic tube running from the center of the lid to the outlet. It may help to plug the end of this tube. Try a temporary seal (like earthquake putty), just in case you wish to remove it.

I know this is an old post, I was wondering if you ever cured the problem? I am having the same.

I'm actually glad you brought this post up...I've been having the same problem with one of my FX5s.:irked:

Now we wait...

I'm getting ready to tear it apart, I posted before I went to work hoping there would be the magic answer when I gat home. I've read all the threads..I think. Gonna lube the lid gasket and o-rings on vales.

I'm currently running 6 FX5's....

I have found that if I put anything other then ceramics in the center of each tray, be it the blue round pads supplied by Hagen for the filter, be it filter floss, like I said, anything other then the ceramics, the units start trapping air, and you will begin hearing gurgling sounds, and bubbles comming out of the exhaust hose into the tank!

This has happened to all the FX5's I have here, at first I thought it might of been a flaw in one of the units, but like I said, they all will do it...

Now I run the sponge around the outside of the trays, and all the 3 center spaces full of ceramics, and problem has gone away.

Someone might want to bring that up with Hagen, and see what they say.

Wow, thanks. First I've heard that.
