FLUVAL FX5 PROBLEM....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just spotted this thread, ive only had my fx5 for about a month and it has basically stopped altogether, ive got sand and there is an airstone pretty close to the intake but not right next to it,obviously i will try all of the above and see if it will sort the problem,at first i thought it was the sand but when i stripped it all down there wasnt a lot at all,and it does sound like its an air problem,il see what happens tomorrow

cheers steve

I took out the blue and white pads, oiled the o-rings with approved oil, that thing is kicking butt now.queastion is will it keep the water as clean as it was?

Ive just moved the air stone a long way away from the intake and restarted the filter but it still not doing anything,il try and take some media out tomorrow.Icant see the o rings needing oiling ive only had it a month,or does that improve the seal.

cheers steve

You can use PAM cooking spray on all the seals...it's rubber safe ...cheap and easy to use. Yes this is one of the reasons I always recomend running nothing except ceramic rings in the center baskets. This isn't a flaw in the system so Hagen wont really care. What it WILL do is anoy the stuffing out of you and cut down the flow rate.

I DO run a bag or two of resin in the baskets every now and then...PERG or ALGON... but avoid anything that will compress and restrict flow.

What happens is that the massive water flow in the filter presses fine media together and forms a barrier...the computer controled motor then cuts back power as the heat increases. The air is almost always due to a leak on the intake side of the hosing and can be controled with PAM.

A certian amount of air will always be present in any large canister...hence the feature that shuts the pump down once a night to allow it to collect and be expelled...after all why add this feature if they don't know for fact that it's going to happen.....

I gathered that it would improve the seal. Logical I guess. Make sure it's fish safe. I got some with my fluidized sand filter. You'd think hagen would put a little bottle in too.

Damn thing completely packed up this morning:irked:

Rang the shop where i purchased it from and they have replaced it today, amwell aquatics it was :headbang2

Il just have to keep an eye on things a bit more now i know theyre temperamental:irked:

cheers steve

I run a LOT of canister filters and HAVE run just about all of them over the years at one time or another. That said...the FX5 is FAR from temperimantal....in fact it's one of the best systems I've every used. The problem is that your dealing with SAND on a canister filter with the drive motor on the bottom of the unit rather than the top. Sand will ALWAYS end up on the bottom and even a very small amount can get between the impeller magnet and the drive housing and stop the impeller long enough to burn out the motor.

Either raise the intake to AT LEAST the mid way point in the tank or switch to a canister system with the drive motor on the top.

you can also put pantyhose/sponge over your filter cover to keep out the sand.;)

Sorry to bump this old thread. Just thought others might want to see it again. I just found it after google searching .

Thanks to 'flagtail', removing the blue pad from the middle chamber fixed my filter and saved me from crushing everything in a 10 meter radius in a raging tantrum.

Hagen says to put it in the lower chamber, but I though I was smart and put one in the middle too. haha.
