I have a Fluval fx5 in a 48x13x18 tank and I've heard a lot of people saying theirs is so quiet that they have to 'put their ear against it to make sure its on'...

Mine is the total opposite of that. Its in my room and its crazy loud. today i tried taking it apart and cleaning the whole thing (so now my tank is not cycled at all:nilly:). Now I think its even louder.:irked:

I don't know whats wrong it, can anyone tell me a possible way to fix this? any suggestions of what to check would be great.

like somethings loose, i unscrewed the back part and i found some salt in it so i thought that was it so i just cleaned that out earlier today but its still making that sound for some reason im not yet sure of.

Sounds like you have something in with the impeller... maybe a piece of substrat.

also make sure that the feet of the FX5 are sitting flush on the bottom of the stand.

Also check the impeller to make sure that it isn't cracked...

If nothing applies, have the voltage checked (by a trained professional) to where the FX5 is plugged into..

Did you buy it new or second hand? How old is it?

Sounds like the impeller isn't being held in place properly to me.
