Fluval FX5 problems

No, it's not supposed to be like this. Did you check the impeller? What did it look like when you took it out, and was it seated properly? From the first video you posted a while back it sounds like the impeller is hitting something. Either it's not seated properly and it's hitting the side of the housing, or there's something (sand, gravel, etc.) stuck in it. Mine runs silently except when there's air in it, and usually shifting the filter around a bit gets rid of that.

not sure how its supose to look if its seated properly but from what i can tell yes. so i unplugged the bubblers and after that its been a little quieter but its still really weak. if i got a new impeller would it be stronger?

Don't have a fx5 but gotta say from the vid it's the motor driving the impeller or the impeller itself. With that said the only thing I suggest doing to is either check the fittings and plumming for grooves that could give you a clue or if it's possible conduct a "bench" test of the motor. Good luck!

so i plugged in the impeller part only and it seemed weak compared to how much i hear it makes the water current so 'vigorous' for the fish, would this mean something is wrong with it or does it not need to go that fast?

plugged in the impeller part only? What other part besides the motor do you have to plug in?

Make sure the large plastic disc around the impeller shaft is not warn excessively. This is what holds the impeller center and if that gets warn, the impeller can vibrate

You could try to hold the pump in your hand with the impeller facing up, make sure you hold the large plastic disc in place, plug in the pump and see if it rattles. Not sure if this will be an "accurate" test but its worth a shot.

You could buy a new one and get the warrenty (which you probably won't need). This is why I never deal with 2nd hand filters...

It's definately the impeller as everyone has said, but you could buy a new one of those and get a problem elsewhere in 6 months. I'd bite the bullet, but that's me.

alright thanks, does anyone think it could be the piping not hanging vertically enough? does anyone use theirs with extra piping hanging over a bit? not touching the ground though.
