Check out THIS thread. 180 is big enough for you to consider a second canister, regardless of what a filter is rated for. The above thread shows the experience of Monsterfishkeepers, which should say more than a manufacturer's recommendation. I suggest to add an Eheim for the boot in volume for biofiltration.

What is the total height of the FX5? I have 24" from top to bottom in my stand. Also if I happen to get this filter what would be the best combo of media for mechanical filtration? Thanks guys.

My FX5 is about as tall as a 5 gallon bucket. I filled mine as follows:

Top Basket- Fluval Pre Filter Media
Middle Basket- Eheim Ehfimech
Bottom Basket- Eheim Substrat Pro w/ a blue pad on top

This filter is just for my mechanical as I have an Eheim 2229 Wet/ Dry also on my 75 gallon for biological. I just cleaned it today after a month and a half and it could have gone longer but it does a great job at cleaning my tank. The FX5 holds alot of media I put 2 boxes in the top, 2L min the middle and 2L in the bottom I believe I couldn't believe how much it held.

Thanks for recommendations for media! As for the height dimensions I am going to need an exact measurement please. I have a bunch of 5 gallon buckets laying around at most of them are different heights and widths. I really dont want to end up ordering this filter and find that I cant make it fit in my stand, that would kinda suck. Thanks

About 22" from the bottom to the top of the valves.:drool:
 
Great, thanks alot. Does anyone think there should be a problem with setting up a FX5 with only 24" of clearence?

It's tight but but that is about what I had to work with. I had 23" so your good to go.
