I know it's been over a year since you posted your mod. I'm planning to get a fluval FX4 or FX6. May I know if the modded rim connector can fit 1.5 to 2.0 inches of bracing? Thank you!

I just went through this process today (FX6). The rim connector was too tight out of the box. I made a couple of easy modifications, and was ultimately able to get it to click into place. To make it fit, I removed the rubber o-ring from the rim connector, and also filed down the 3 small plastic fins that are on the part of the connector that sits inside the tank. Putting soap on the rim of the tank and the connector also helped it slide over the rim.
I don't think either of the modifications had a significant impact on the function/integrity of the connector. I plan to use waterproof velcro tape to further secure the hose and connector just to make sure it stays in place. That said, there is no way the connector is "slipping off" the rim of the tank. Only possible issue I can see is the connector plastic eventually snapping from fatigue, as it's pretty tight (hence the velcro tape as a back up if that ever occurs).
