Fluval G series

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
went to the store today but did not get to play around again, they were packed (25th anniversary sale).

however, my pricing is wrong.

its 499 for the small one and 569 for the big one.

guess now they will sell even less of the smaller units.

talked to the employees (who know me, I used to work there) and they said the Hagen reps are in denial about the filters.

the hagen reps don't seen to think that the fact that the FX5 is almost half the price is going to affect the sales of these one bit, and according to the reps, the price is going to remain as is..

delusional? time will tell.

bro
i talked to a buddy from hagen
and according to him
this filter is targeted towards rich beginners who just want fish and a filter that does it all!
that is the target market for this filter..
fx5s are more towards hobbyists who want to get involved and its for monster tanks.
the G is targeted for smaller tanks e.g 75 gallons or smaller

the other thing that the Hagen reps claim is that the probes never need to be recalibrated, which I find hard to believe.

part of my work as a watewater treatment plant operator involves lots of laboratory work, and we use probes/monitors that are very expensive peices of equipment, and even they need to be recalibrated from time to time.

Gosh! As 12-volt said, that really is a narrow niche. I'm asking myself, "If I were filthy rich, would I set up my tank and perform maintenance or would I be too busy to want to bother with that? Would I pay a professional to set up and perform maintenance?" I don't know . . . If I were that rich, I'd probably want to hire a pro, but I'd be missing out on the pleasure of having my own hands involved in the creation and maintaining of the tank. But, If I did hire a pro to set up the tank, I'd probably say buy the best equiptment that money can buy. Would a FX5 or G series be the choice that the professional would select? I really think they will reduce the price on these at some point. I think they have missed their mark on these.

the biggest problem I see for everyone but the filthy rich is that the smaller model (G3) although it is rated for an 80g tank, in the tradition of every manufacturer out there, appears to be way overrated for a tank that size.

this is always the case. Manufacturers always overrate their filters. problem is, the small model is still $500 (Canadian).

so, who is going to go out and spend $500 on a filter for a 35 or 45g tank?

unless you are buying the filter just because its a new filter and you want to try it. which can also be the case. some people just love their toys. and thats cool.

but most people won't spend that kind of cash just because it is the latest newest thing.

Personally, I think this filter will be bought mainly by the reef enthusiasts. they are the demographic in our hobby with the most cash (if you can make a generalization like that).

if you go over to reefcentral for example and look at many of the tank build threads, its obvious that reefers seem to have a lot of cash to spend:grinno:

I can tell you this the people who have the quid wont quibble at the price!

I think this filter was designed with people who need sleekness for show! What looks better a fx5 or this one.

I think this was also designed with the high class fish keeper in mind who has a smaller tank and don't care about the cost of the filter

Just my 2 cents

the filter looks fantastic. if I had one, it would be on display in the middle of the room.

to hell with under the tank LOL

the tank would be in the corner, and the fluval would be on my coffee table for all to see. haha

LOL . . . i've seen the sexy, blue light on it. i guess fluval did their marketing research. i have to assume that they don't want to create another EDSEL. maybe this is the EDSEL of aquarium filters.
