Fluval or Eheim?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
go for either they are both good and reliable, manufactured in italy/germany. if you got the cash to splash out on ehiems then go for it:popcorn:

Thanks for the info all!
Thanks all, it feels like in 'who wants to be a millionaire' when the crowd votes for an answer, and 95% of the audience votes for an answer :)

I already have a fluval 305 for my 55g community tank, had no problems with it in the past few months it's been going. Of course when you guys are talking of filters running for many, many years, a few months is no indication of quality.

I'm really asking for a few years down the line, once my little troupe of clown loaches get bigger, will need to bite the bullet and get a massive tank for them... (well, massive in a small flat, not massive by MFK standards hehe)
It will be a good excuse to finally go BIG FISH, my boyfriend is increasingly exasperated by the tanks taking over the house already, and there's only like 120G between four tanks, for trop. comm., oranda, an axolotl and a little tiny fry/hospital tank...
So, at that time, with a sturdy, lidded and lit 150-200g tank and moderately attractive stand costing well over 1k (and that's used!) over here in NZ, I will of course wanna invest in the best quality possible for equipment. In the meantime, It's all I can do to keep an eye out for equipment, going cheap... cause that price difference in linked thread is still a slight deterrent... however:

Looks like Eheim it is!
*round of applause for Eheim*

Eheim, have experience with both.

Many people, especially Australians seem to have the opinion that FX5's are the best large scale filter. While 3500lph output is quite huge, filtration capacity is very low when not including the mechanical pre-filter sponge that runs down the side. For example, an Eheim 2217 can hold the same amount of actual media (pending mechnical setup) as an FX5.

The main cause of the FX5 applause is understandably the price, but the constant advice drumming that goes on regarding flow rates and turnover. Give me an Eheim 2260 that turns over the tank 4 times an hour with 20L of media capacity, compared to the FX5 which will turn it over 6 times at max flow rate with only 6-7L of effective media capacity (correct me if that's wrong, I noticed they didn't list it on that AquaBiotope review linked earlier).

Many people seem to have forgotten that water spending more time travelling through more media is of higher quality, provided it's being turned over at least a few times an hour of course.

Duly noted - quality over quantity... see this is why I asked here, rather than just reading the sides of the boxes (gph etc)
And I never even thought about power usage, etc.
You all rock :headbang2

fluval is my vote. ehiem are great but the cost is greatly off setting. ehiems are substationally more expensive here. I saw at Petco(not a great spot to buy filters i know) a ehiem rated for a 55 i think it was, for over 300. the same for a fluval is about 100.

i like eheims , and hate fluvals. But the FX5 is unbeatable..... my canister line up....

Big canister - fx5 only

all other canisters- 3 rena xp4's , 2 rena xp3's

if you can buy an fx5 no matter what tank size it will always come in handy.

Otherwise if you really dont need that much or can spend the cash, get a rena. Ebay they are really cheap

i have 2 of each. 2080 eheim and fx5. setup for the fx5 is easier, more flow for sure but less media. i dont use fine filter pad in fx5 just foam and biomax and i leave the top media tray empty. 340$ per fx5 with media.
eheim has adjustable flow control, 2 filter pads, the fine has to be changed every 3-4 weeks or it clogs up. 2 intakes, nice. little smaller and quieter. after i just rambled on i think after using both i like the fluval the best but really close call.
