fluvals

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have a fluval 404, a rena xp3, a few magnums, ac 500s, ect. looking at all of the designs i would say that the fluval has the worst design. the water goes down through foam and then up the sides of all of the media cartridges. there is actually a raised peice of plastic preventing the water from making into the bottom media cartridge. on others like the xp3 the water is forced to go through.
lastly you could use a smaller filter on a 30 gallon but more filteration won't hurt.
i use a fluval404 full blast on an octagon 27 gallon tank

you have a arrow and a ray in a 30g???

i think a fluval 404 is overkill for a 30 gallon. probable be more money efficient with an aquaclear110 (500 model). can fit the same amount of media for more than half the price.
Yup, m using a 404 on a 30 and they love it. All of them are active and healthy. Eating right and no sickness. I know it's an overkill but better than safe than never.

well, the thing is i already have a penguin 350 on the 30 along with a penguin 100 along with a penguin 660r sponge filter..... i really want the best filter for the 30 that would cost just about $100... i heard fluval canisters were nice so i thought i should get it... if fluvuals arent the best, what is the best filter?
If yoou want the best, go w/ eheim.

Eheim, eheim, eheim. Pricey, but you have to pay to get quality. When you setup an eheim filter right before/after a fluval, you will know what i mean.

I do have fluvals, but that's just because I dealed them for free with tanks I bought. I have a eheim 2217 on a 30g tank...I tell you I barely had to clean the glass. Was perfect. They are also easy to clean, and the media is reusable (it's substrate). The foams are a little expensive, but I clean them 2/3 time so it's not bad.

My 2 cents :)

Hey Chuck,

The new '04 fluvals are a breeze to clean compared to the older '03 models. The new ones have a quick disconnect that makes it real easy to separate the unit from the hoses. I also like the AquaClear line. I still have a mini and a 200 from ten years ago. They are still running! I regret I gave away a 500 some time ago.

also, what is priming? never really understood what it meant.... now im thinking of getting the rena xp3 cuz its on sale for 89.99.. what turned me off about the fluval was the portion of water not passing thru the media......if i did get the xp3, would it be a nice filter for my 30?

There is only one real system... and that's EHEIM I have used those since early 80's. Absolutly best reliability and best water circulation and filtering. I have now in my tank EHEIM Classic 2217 and second similar one coming next week.

it's too pricey....... you can get the same thing with a tad bit diference for half the price....
