They show up randomly when someone manages to illegally export them. I heard a rumor that they are being bred but it could be total bollocks. It is probably possible to order them online. Although I recommend no one buy them since they are endangered and most people can't care for them properly.

Then why not encourage captive breeding proejects to try and become less dependent on wild caught turtles..

Heads up to noobs who want to buy one, they get huge. I have seen one that was 18.5 kilos and 60 cm across the shell. Apparently they can get even larger as well. They are for experienced hobbyists only. Plus, it is a turtle and like most turtles will live for decades.

As far as I know it is illegal to export them at all. But buying them in the states and in Canada is legal. But many people frown upon it because they are endangered.

I was concerned about that too which is the reason why I didn't put in a pleco, thankfully it hasn't been an issue

But do pay attention. It wouldn't take long for that flagtail to rasp a hole into it's soft shell.

I have only heard rumors of breeding. I have never seen it confirmed. Until then I will tell people not to buy them.

It takes forever for them to get huge. They're not hard to find, obviously OP got one for free. They are protected, but not endangered. They're illegal to be exported in some countries, but they're not totally illegal from being exported. Only you the one who's frown, not many people. Have you actually keep one to determine how hard to care for one?

Have you actually saw in person the one 60cm across the shell, weight 18.5 kilos, or you just happen saw it online?
