Foam and film, Help!

I don't think I've been adding too much prime, buy maybe. I have always been pretty light on feeding, so I don't think that's the cause.

Maybe the oil/scum at the surface is from the sand. I did a 50% water change yesterday, today there was no oil/scum, then I vacuumed some poo and stirred up the sand and some of the oily stuff is back at the surface.

Oh, I guess I should have figured it was Prime the first time you said you added Prime. :D

It could be stirring up crud in your substrate. I just suggested the treatment because that seems to be a more common cause. It doesn't take too much extra to make it bubbly and filmy.

Hmm, maybe. But I dont know that prime would explain the oil at the surface.

I am not sure if this is the right thread or not.

Lately I have been having a oily look film at the surface of my 75 gallon. I have also noticed that there is a lot of bubbles/foam at the top around the edges.

I have a lot of surface agitation, 2 xp3's pointed at the surface with the spraybar, 2 ac110's, and 1 400gph powerhead used for surface agitation.

The only thing that has changed lately is changed from crushed coral substrate to pool filter sand. It says on the bag that it is quartz (silica) sand of extreme purity and says its inert. I noticed today though that the sand is magnetic, which I found kind of strange.

Just out of curiosity, whats the time frame between adding the sand and seeing the oil in your water????? You said you stirred up the sand and now theres oil, this may be elementary, but some dont do it, DID YOU WASH YOUR SAND BEFORE YOU ADDED IT TO THE TANK??????

I washed the sand for hours before adding it to the tank. It still got cloudy once I added it but it cleared up withing a few hours. I am not entirely sure on the time frame but I switched to the sand about 3 weeks ago, and I probably noticed to oilyness and bubbles/foam about a week and a half ago.

pockets of bacteria in the sand? How often is it stirred ? What are you feeding them again ? Sardines? JP :)
