Wanted to get some input about what some of you guys are doing as far as breeding snails and such for the puffers.

I've searched the forums and most seem to feed just raw shrimp or the threads just turn into bashing about what some online reference states a fish needs to be in so not really helpful.

I've attempted to breed Ramshorn snails for my past puffers and even switched to RedCherryShrimp cause they are much more prolific than the snails or any other replenishing food source for that matter but those are small in comparison and don't seem to fill the puffer up.

The Ramshorn tank(30g planted) would populate fairly fast but the growth rate was not so great and I would probably have to empty the whole tank to feed maybe an adult GSP. I've have maybe a handful of Ramshorn that got dime size but that was all.

I've looked into breeding mystery snails as they get large enough to fulfill a bigger puffer and give a bit of a crunch when bitten into but have no experience in it. The LFS has them for sale for .99ea and all their tanks seem to be loaded with them so maybe it's easier than I think?

If anyone has a setup for this purpose please do share.
-type of snail
-filtration
-lighting
-feeding
-waterchange frequency
-etc.

Thanks in advance and pretty stoked to be joining the ranks.

You can have whatever snails i have if it helps, they are destroying my shrimp tank

are they big? I have a ton of ramshorn but they are the size of whole black pepper seeds.
How are they destroying your shrimp tank?

I did have a bunch of Nerites in Snoop's tank which were there already and he's piled them up by the front glass for me and apparently he can't break through their hard shell so I've had to net those out.

The biggest are the size of m&ms. They ate all my riccia and tore up my sword

Avoid MTS snails, as they are known to have very hard shells that can crack a fahakas teeth...

I used to breed ramshorn snails, but then now breed marble crays instead... Much easier to care for plus they breed pretty prolifically as well...

Although you will have to see if they are legal in your area...

whoa... not many snails eat plants or should I say not many hitchhiker snails eat plants

Would you have a picture of them for possible I.D.? When you say M&M, would that be a plain M&M or a peanut M&M? LoL

If you're not too far off from where I'm at I'll gladly rid you of those snails.

Thanks for your reply, I avoid MTS like the plague, I have assassin snails in my tank just to make sure I don't ever get MTS!

The marmorkebs I have considered as I have kept/bred Cambarellus Patzcuarensis Orange (which aren't as prolific) but I don't want to deal with trying not to forget about them. I don't know about the marmorkebs but the CPOs would become cannibalistic if I forget to feed or the tank gets crowded. Do you have that problem with yours? Could you share further into detail about how you have them set up and the reproduction rate of them thus far? I am almost positive they are legal for sale/trade as I have seen LFS selling them but I would double check before ordering some if I can't find them locally.

I figured with snails I could set something up outside with a few native plants and let them go a muck.

I dont use mine as a steady food source more as a snack option so i only keep them in a 10G with lots of driftwood and a fake plastic bush for young crays to hide in...

Its normally not too bad if you forget to feed given there is enough hiding space... As for how often they berry depends on how often you feed and clean their water... But they do breed reasonably often, and given a large enough tank im sure they would breed even more...
