Food factories

I raised mystery snails for awhile. They like warm (low to mid 80's-ish)water and about 3 inches of space above the water level to lay their eggs. Keep an air stone or something near the eggs so the popping bubbles will keep the eggs damp. They like a tiny bit of mist to keep them from drying out. They're really neat to look at. They lay a weird cluster of eggs that is about the size of my thumb. Pretty soon, they hatch and fall into the water, and you're left with this dry yuck on the side of the tank which scrapes off easily. They grow quickly, and will eat anything they can reach.

I think this whole breeding food thing might not be worth it and not be able to keep up with my puffers intake of food.

I have spoken with some locals and it seems that we have a outbreak of mystery snails in our local waters so instead of a breeding facility I will be using those resources as a quarantine facility.

Must be my lucky day! a friend and LFS contacted me about my new pet and offered wholesale pricing on a ton of Mystery snails as a food source for my puffer.

Went and picked up about 40 for now and was assured an endless supply!

Tran?

Hell yeah! I hit him up about it cause a local told me he knew where to collect apple snails locally but there was little truth behind that. turns out he gets good deals on them if bought in bulks of 500 at a time and he shared the discount so I grabbed some to start off with.

Went and got my rubbermaid tub and will be setting up a quarantine, gut loading, breeding tank for them tonight.

Yea i used to work for him, i thought you knew about that. Hes by far the best lfs owner

Well I knew he hooks it up and always there to help and I see all LFS with tons of mystery snails but they are all labeled like $1.99 or $2.99 which was why I tried to explore my options and attempt a breeding tank but at the price he gave them to me I don't think I will need to breed anything.

We buy about 50lbs. of live crawfish from the local grocery store when they are in season, then freeze all them in smaller ziploc bags. That lasts our Mbu about a full year. I also supplement with whole, live marine mussels, thawed prawns, and the occasional garden snail. 90% crawfish, though. I believe it is important for their teeth.

I agree breeding live food as a stable diet for a puffer can be kinda pointless unless you have something like a 55 - 100G+ tank just for breeding food...

Yeah I've figured that out now, Now the tank or tub rather is being used for quarantine and gut loading.

I found a local source for Apple snails for free which should be endless and if not there is a LFS that will sell me Mystery snails at cost. Being from the south I have a lot of places to get live crawfish which so happens I went today to grab a handful of them to feed to the puffer just to watch him eat.
