What's a tri-color bala shark? I know what is a bala shark, but never heard of a "tri-color".

tri-color shark is another uncommon "common" name for bala sharks.

I've seen a small school of 14- 15" Balas. I always liked them, and have three in our 150g and 2 in the 75g. I would get the Bala, but remember that they are a) extremely peaceful and can be intimidated by even a small, vicious little fish. b) They're much happier in a school of their own kind and c) they're great jumpers! so keep that tank covered.

I would advise against it, I have a ~11" Bala Shark in a 120g. Its the only Bala in there with only 2 small angels and my juvenuile Murray Cod.

He basically jumps out of, or tries to jump out of the tank, everytime I try and do any maintenance or if anyone moves too quickly around the tank. They are a very quick, skittish fish and its always knocking scales off and gouging itself on the tank braces and trying to jump through the cover glasses. I feel my tank is too small for one this size and I dont have any other large fish in there at the moment, with Oscars it would be impossible. :(

They also like to be in a pack so if you had 3 or so they might be a bit more relaxed but you wont get 3 in that sized tank - especially with an Oscars! These guys need plenty of swimming space when they get to that size.

My brother-in-law has one over a foot in his 150. Definately a very skittish fish.

The bala in my tank is just over 6 inches and is the biggest thing in my 90. He torments a few of my other fish on a daily basis but bolts when I open the top to feed. Of course .. my other fish are not oscars. You may end of with a territory war.

For those who have these huge balas, how long did it take to reach that length?
About how long does it take to reach 12 inches?

:D

I think my brother-in-law has had his for 6 or 7 years but it has no other fish to compete with other than a big common pleco. My bala which is between 6-8 inches has been in my tank for almost 3 years.

what I would do is buy another tank for the bala,if not your oscars will probably kill it ..mine would they are very territorial. Ive had my 2 balas for thre years and their about 4.5-5 inches would love to see a footer though. definetly a good reason for a new tank.. if you dont buy let me know ill see if i cant make room for him..
