for all you gun owners, why is the second amendment important?

The Second Amendment states that: “men have the right keep and bear arms.” This amendment was created to keep a well regulated militia and when necessary, to secure the security of a free State or person. In other words the second amendment was created to keep and maintain a free state, if the people are given the right to keep and bear arms. In my words, I think this amendment allows US citizens to use or bear arms for the single purpose of self defense and to prevent our government from having complete power over the people.
This amendment can mean a lot to the American people, good or bad. There are some people who will follow and respect the second amendment, and those who use this amendment for acts of crime. Since our ancestors came here to escape
a totalitarian government, the Second Amendment ensured U.S. citizens that their government will never have complete control of them. Since this amendment has ensured that idea for hundreds of years, I don’t see why people are ranting about how they want to remove the second amendment.
thats what i have so far. if any one has something to add or edit feel free to do so.

I would just threaten to shoot the teach, if he/she doesn't give you an A.

I support it because some people hate it

This amendment went into effect when it was still common to call upon everyday, untrained citizens to suddenly fight in wars, when individuals hunted for food, and when calling 911 was not an option. It was partly out of necessity of doing so in era that the Bill of Rights was written. Also, in this time of upheaval, the people living in what is now the United States did not all share the same views. There was fear, unrest, and government instability. I believe that there was also a strong sense of distrust towards government and the abuse of power the created a need to be able to protect oneself even against the government.

For those living in an urban environment today, most people do not have a single need or reason to ever own, handle or understand a gun, and yet many people have the desire to do so. For some, it is a sense that you can protect yourself. For others, its a hobby. And for still others, it is simply a fashion accessory. Each gun owner has their reasons, and you hope they are reasonable and responsible ones.

Okay, I'll go on a limb here see how fast someone takes a swipe. If you're going to make some comment to me, please use logic, reasoning, etc and not lame, unjustified stabs or cheap shots... I believe that we have a right to responsibly bear arms. What I mean is that if you choose to own and operate a weapon, there needs to be some required form of hands on education and/or written AND PRACTICAL test that goes along with each gun sale. A drunk father showing his 7 year old how to fire a gun doesn't count. Safety, maintenance, accuracy, and ANGER MANAGEMENT need to be some of the requirements. Just because someone is momentarily sober, has waited for three days, and doesn't have too bad of a record does not qualify them to buy and handle a gun.

This is a quality point.

I would like to say that I am well trained to own a gun, and have learned the responsibilities of being a firearm owner. I use a gun for personal protection, and for hunting. I do agree that there needs to be regulations. Saying that, I firmly believe that any sane person who wants to own a gun and has been educated on weapons, should have that right.

If there were a sudden ban on all firearms. The criminal nation would simply go to another weapon type or engineer their own "gun". Or just get unregistered guns that have been hidden. That being said, if you have ever found yourself with a gun to you head.. or to the back of your head (in my case). You wonder what having a weapon could do for you as a means of personal protection. The economic situation and poverty level has driven people to a criminal lifestyle. Adding to the large criminal population. The amount of murders and deaths due to robbery and home invasions in the media is stunning.

I would also like to say that there still is fear, unrest, and certainly government instability. I am truly uncertain of my government and afraid that the repercussion from today will greatly affect the future generations quality of life.

I own a gun simply because it is a legal tool to defend my rights as a US citizen.

The word "gun" has been bent into an insidious term. It now describes malice, hatred, and death.

The real word you are looking for is "Mankind".

How can you say that about one word, and in the same breath strive to do it with another?

Agree on all your points. But that one in particular I was going to say. I don't think our goverment is currently that stable. Doesn't mean it will destruct at any moment. But I wouldn't call our goverment stable in it's current state. Much of it has failed and continues to fail. From our senate to our judicial system.

Also I agree on some of what wet whiskers said, but I do believe people in urban dwellings still have reasons to own a firearm. Unfortunately, crime happens everywhere. In the city, as well as the suburbs. And while the police are great. And I support you if you have full faith in them. You have to be able to get to a phone to call, they don't arrive immediately. In that time the criminal could harm you, your wife, your kids, steal your belongings, even kidnap your child or an adult for finanical gain. So I support those who want to have a firearm just in case they are a situation that it will help them.

Our forefathers couldn't forsee the time in which we live in currently. So the second amendment may have been created originally for militia purposes but it still protects a persons right to bear arms so we as a people have adapted it to protect us in the 21st century.

if anything, living in the the urban environment is more a reason to own a gun. do you watch the news? mass killings and crime happens in the cities, not out in the country where you have one house every 3 miles.

and i own guns because i can, and because i enjoy them :)

I love guns. I also love the second amendment. Each have their own reasons.
I love guns because I have a respect for any precision machine designed to do one thing really well. The idea of a contraption that contains an explosion and sends a chunk of metal a long distance at great speeds fascinates me even if its only to put holes in paper. I hope to never use a gun against a another human being it would be a terrible mess.
I love the 2nd amendment because it goes beyond guns. I carry a knife everywhere I go. Its a useful tool in many situations and when necessary makes a wonderful weapon. I have been forced to use it in defense of my life and I have used it to cut loose threads off my pants legs. Without the second amendment there would be no self defense laws at all. I wouldn't be able to carry my knife, I wouldn't be able to pick up a pipe and brain some guy trying to rape my gf. The 2nd amendment in my eyes is the groundwork for self defense in general and without it there would be no way to protect the other 9 important freedoms on that list.
