I have to disagree with your last statement. The Dogo Argentino.......

Probably one of the best, well constructed posts ever on MFK. Nice job

Coming from someone who has 12,000+ posts-- thanks!

Having to put down my sick pit yesterday has inspired me to start writing, and so I am going to be writing a book about how his life taught me some valuable things, and this thread will definitely help with my stereotype section.

Pitbulls are close to my heart, as are other breeds to other people, and I have constructed myself to be an advocate for dog breed education- not just for pitbull type breeds either. There is so much more that I could add to this thread, but it's kind of like talking to a brick wall.. some people just choose not to be educated.

Hello; Just as an extension of the thread topic and generally directed to those who have defended dogs in the contex that the dogs are not at fault. How do you propose that society deal with dogs that have attacked, killed and/or mauled people?
If you wish, include maulings on other dogs. I believe that mauling of dogs by other dogs is treated as a property issue.

Hello; I posed a question in the above post some weeks ago. Many of you have since posted interesting stories about good experiences with the pitbull breed. The question in my post was not meant especially to single out that breed, but that is what this thread is about. Leaving aside your good experiences and how the owners are at fault for a moment, what about the dogs that have actually bitten, mauled or killed a person?

you always have to look at the situation for the mauling or whatever the case may be. why did the dog action aggressively? was the person teasing it or harming it? or did the dog attack unprovoked? getting the truth is hard because very little people will admit to be ingat fault if they are.

if the dog attacked unprovoked, regardless of the breed, it needs to be euthanized. if the dog was provoked, then a decision needs to be made based on the entire story with all things examined.

Thats a whoel other debate I dont really want to participate in. Ill just say killing the dog is rarely the only option.

any dog that attacks for no reason is a severe threat to its self and others. consider the dog in terms of someone who kills someone just because. chances are if they get away with it once, it will happen again.

Pit bulls demand respect! They have been bred for the sole purpose of the sport of fighting dogs. But this doesn't mean they can't be man best friend, pit bulls can make excellent pets, they are very loving breed and often very sweet. But as all breeds have a purpose. Its just unlucky that pit bulls get blamed for a lot of the problems in the K9 world. They can be awesome dogs, I can say from first hand as a past owner. It depends on the dogs personality.

You can take the dog out of the fight, but you can't take the fight out of the dog...

really hate to see people jibber jabber about dogs from what they heard... so please read before you judge the breed.

1. the first dog to ever get a american war medal & to be the heaviest medal decorated dog & etc was a american pit bull terrier named mr. stubby aka sgt. stubby.

2. american pit bull terriers nor any other type of dog/breed does not have "lock jaws" or jaws that lock. this is not true & have been proven.
3. american pit bull terriers do have a strong bite but does not have the strongest bite. it has been proven that a rottweiler has a stronger bite at a bite force of 328 pounds (which was stated to be one of the strongest bite force for k9s & coming second a german shepard...
4. to those who dislike or judge the breed because of bad media and saying you wont ever own a american pit bull terrier because it will bite your children or your infant baby all i can say is your a joke... studies and other methods have proven small dog breeds have cause or has bit more people, children & etc by a far cry amount... while american pit bull terriers came in second only to a golden retriever to being one of the best dogs for a house/house pet.
5. to those who use the word "pit bull" very loosely & freely the word or name "pit bull" is not a breed. it is a name or nickname used by people to categorize multiple breeds of similar appearance & etc. for ex: people will call a "american bully" which is actually a newly recognized breed as a "pit bull" or a call a "american staffordshire terrier" a "pit bull"
6. many dont know this fact but many famous ppl have/had american pit bull terriers or similar terrier breeds or what most people would say "pit bull" as pets & have regarded this breed with the highest respect giving only praises to this type of breed. fyi: theadore roosevelt our 26th president has had a american pit bull terrier & said that his dog was the best in the world, not in these words, also the famous helen keller also has had a american pit bull terrier & truly loved her dog... so how can you say american pit bull terriers or similar terrier breeds are bad without even knowing anything about this breed? this ignorance is what makes the breed look bad and the exaggeration of the media without any knowledge giving the breed a bad name till this day...
7. in many media/news when ever a severe dog bite happens they automatically presume it's a bully/terrier breed & say "a pit bull attacked a..." but in the end in almost every case 80% of dogs that attacked a person on the news & etc was proven not to be a "pit bull" or terrier breed but a mixed dog of some sort of other breed... & in other cases other breeds of dogs like a dalmation or another breed(not flaming these breeds btw just using as a example)..

8. for "Lambrakopoulos" i dont know who told you that "Pit bulls demands respect" but thats utter B$%*!(_@ non-sense!... please educate yourself about the breed before you say anything... "pit bulls" & "bully" breeds where not bred for the sole purpose of sports dog fighting or any kind of k9 fighting... if you know the history of the breed or anything about "american pit bull terriers" you will know that the american pit bull terriers or pit bull breeds were bred for the purpose of "bull baiting in the pit" hence the name " PIT - BULL" where multiple dogs (american pit bull terriers) or other terrier breeds were used to take down a bull in a "pit" or ring...also i dont know why you would say "you can take the dog out of a fight, but you cant take the fight out of a dog..." i have helped & have seen with my own 2 eyes hundreds of cases where dogs that were used to fight mainly "pit bull" type dog breeds were rehomed to houses with children & other small dogs and the dogs that were rehomed was the best dog ever... in many cases the smaller breed dogs will try and to be the alpha in this case the dog "pit bull" does nothing. almost every pit bull type dog/breed i have helped or seen rehomed just let the smaller dog be alpha do what ever he wants even nip & bite him/her. also if you wanna talk about a dog that has been bred solely for the purpose of dog fighting and sport dog fighting or anything of k9 fights between k9s learn the breed before. the breed of dog that has been bred solely for fighting other dogs in dog fights & etc is the breed known as " Presa de Canario" or also known as "Presa Canario" which is a mix of many different breeds to achieve the the size/instinct/ natural aggressive behavior & etc fitting for a dog to fight another dog & win.

there is a lot more things i can say but ill stop here since i know i got a little carried away... & am sorry for that... but i hate it when people badly judge the breed i love & grew up with & have studied my whole life... and again i apologize for this stupidly long post... but i have to educate those people who talk about the breed acting like they know the breed only be stating stereotyped information that isnt even true that is all over the media...

Hello; Roughly six posts so far. I will throw in with the opinion that a dog that has bitten, mauled or killed a person should in most cases be put down. In a much earlier post I cited some situations in which a dog attack may be considered justified. Not much has been added to that list. Allow me to modify my question to the extent of taking dog attacks out of the discussion that can be argued to be justified. Let's narrow the question to dog attacks on prople that cannot be justified.

Flle free to respond in the general case, but I will make up a particular case. Lets say that you have a five year old child and that your neighbor has a pit bull that has already killed a child. ( An extreme example, for sure, but perhaps narrow enough to keep the discussion focused.) What do you think should be done with that dog?
