Found salamander eggs in drainage creek, now what?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would be relocating within less than a mile or two to a creek that is almost identicle exept that it doesn't dry up as fast.

Pics comming...

No, bud. Same creek, same culture. If you started spawning Southern Europeans in North Africa, it would raise the incidence of skin cancer, see? We have no idea what adaptations your eggs have made to that rusty, poopy puddle that the other population might suffer from.

true, I guess I'll be puting the majority back, but may still keep 1 or 2. :D
here's some photos

Could you ID the adult from the eggs?

They're a species of Ambystoma. From the size and shape of the mass I'd say it's either A. maculatum (spotted salamander), A. talpoideum (mole salamander), or A. tigrinum (eastern tiger salamander), with the first being most likely. If the mass is fairly rigid, stiffer than jello, than it's probably A. maculatum. If the mass is more flaccid, like a glob of algae, it could be either of the others.

Keep the water they are in well-aerated and don't let it got too warm, or the embryos in the center will asphyxiate and the whole mass will start rotting. Be sure to have small live prey on hand for when they hatch. Daphnia are ideal. Baby brine shrimp will also work.

Good luck!

Personally I have no issue with him taking the eggs out and trying to raise them.

They are salamanders, I have two salamanders wild caught in a back yard in a farm close to regina and I rather like them they are totally cool pets.
